Lawrence school board vice president's commentary on Kansas politics gains wide following

Lawrence school board members don’t tend to shy away from commenting about legislation that affects Kansas school districts, but one board member is taking his commentary to a wider audience.

Over the past month, school board Vice President Marcel Harmon has written three pieces for the news and entertainment website Salon that have generated several hundred comments. The most recent, titled "Sam Brownback declares war on Kansas: This is how extremists gut a state — and democracy" was published on Tuesday.

A piece Harmon wrote a few weeks ago, titled, "Sam Brownback, America’s worst governor: He’s gutted Kansas with an ultraconservative, religious agenda — and it’s getting worse", was shared more than 10,000 times on Facebook. It also prompted a reaction from the Kansas Policy Institute, a conservative think tank. The reaction piece, "Lawrence school board member makes many false claims in angry rant", was written by KPI president Dave Trabert and criticized Harmon’s “cruel, angry tone.”

Links to all three of Harmon's recent essays are available here.

There are those who believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Nature Spirits !......mostly........innocent children !

Then there are still those who still believe in Sam Brownback and his faulty economic predictions ?! ......mostly the "mislead",......or "self deceived for a pressing reason of some $ sort or another" ???

Well, If the Ouija Board tells you to believe Sam....... then I guess that you are going to believe ?!......... Or was it your Daily Horoscope?,.....a Tarrot Card misread?,....did your Crystal Ball short out?,......or are you getting your state economic advise from a Dial Up 1-800 Psychic Hot Line ?

I wonder if they are "cooking the books....as well", to hide an even worse mess than what we see, monthly ???

I think that they have a "monkey on their backs" called "BUSINESS" and it needs a regular "shot of money".

More conservatives who are claiming that there are "false claims", but then they do not specify which claims are false. They just whine about the "cruel, angry tone". What a bunch of whiners. Is he angry. Yes!!! Are a lot of people in Kansas angry? Yes!!! If you can't face the anger that you have created go cry in your bedroom.

If you read my piece, you'll find a long list of false claims that were debunked.

Well, after skimming your article topped with an uncredited but copyrighted image that may or may not pass fair use guidelines (I'll leave that to legal@wb.com to sort out.) I don't really see much of substance. Just the classic talking points. Here's the first one, where you try to deny that your aim is privatization.

Trabert claim: "The only people talking about privatization of education are the unions and other special interests trying to scare citizens into submitting to their demands for a blank check."

The latest school funding bill had sections hot off of ALEC that advanced privatization through vouchers. And your particular special interest group has been fundraising off the idea for a very long time.

Is Harmon writing in an official capacity on behalf of the entire board?

It doesn't matter, Sam, he didn't give up his 1st Amendment rights when he was elected.

Knowing "Brokenback" he'll wanr to impeach him. You know if he would have stuck to practical cuts and stayed away from the far religous right agenda, people might understand. However the far right has no tolorence for being practical only religously extreme.

Yes it does matter. His comments are above his signature and his board position.

If it is on behalf of the board, was it discussed in public? Why not all the board members ?

If it is only his opinion, his identification should stop at his name.

Wrong about what.

Was he representing the entire board with his silly Wizard of Oz comments?

Of course not. Read the statutes. You are confusing this with either KOMA or some made up rule because you don't like what he has to say.

Note he did not list the consulting firm he works for.

Just take out Vice President of the Lawrence School Board and I have no issue with his publication.

So, Sam, you have a problem with people who are uniquely qualified to speak? you don't want to hear rom those who actually PARTICIPATE in the activities that are being debunked? How sad for you.

Interesting how Trabert cites numbers from the state budget and State Board of Education.

All you present is the same tired rhetoric from standard liberal dogma. Lets see your actual data to refute him.

KPI numbers are not necessarily fact only KPI speculation. I did not see anywhere in the salon article that Marcel Harmon represented himself as anyone but Marcel Harmon.

"Legislative leaders from both sides praised Parkinson, who has served in the House and Senate and was Kansas Republican Party chairman before he switched to the Democratic Party in 2006 to run with Sebelius as lieutenant governor."

Perhaps Mr Parkinson realized being a republican in Kansas was impossible considering republicans were getting replaced with ALEC RINO's courtesy of very conservative big dollars from very very few sources.

The GOP got bought by the RINO ALEC Extreme Invaders and this agenda item is alive and well in most all states.

Yes Kansas voters should pay a lot more attention to what they are voting for BUT so should ever other state in the union. There are at least 18 states under this umbrella of destruction.

The radical extreme invaders are under the control of quite a sophisticated anti american agenda which wants to own all tax dollar supported government services for the trillions in profits and guaranteed cost increases.

The radical extreme invaders are under the control of quite a sophisticated anti american agenda which wants to over throw the USA government in which Paul Ryan is in a perfect position top help manipulate that agenda.

PauL Ryan trained under Sam Brownback before ever becoming an elected official.

The radical extreme invaders are directed to a significant degree by Aegis Strategic, Gone Wild.

This consulting firm handpicks local, state, and federal candidates who share the Kochs' free-market, limited-government agenda, and groom them to win elections. "We seek out electable advocates of the freedom and opportunity agenda who will be forceful at both the policy and political levels," the company notes on its website.

Aegis says it can manage every aspect of a campaign, including advertising, direct mail, social media, and fundraising.

Ow SAM !

Everyday some liar from the state of Kansas give it's income tax estimates to us and those are state figures . How could they be so far incorrect ? Like their other lies ?

And what happened to those millions of illegal Mexican voters ( who must have voted for brownie. ) from his last election ? ........are Koback and his office helpers blind;.... or can't Kris find any of those millions of illegal Mexicans voters because they don't and never did exist . .

Why do you imagine "for other than a self serving reason", that Kansans should wholesale buy politically twisted figures from Topeka ?

For all that we know Kobach found 700 republican voters ( not a bi-partisan investigation and was done by a guy who thinks that he is above the law ) who voted more than once, twice or three times but only went after 7 moderate republicans to get even ?
