Police make arrest in fast-food restaurant bathroom
Lawrence police made an arrest over the weekend in an Arby’s bathroom, where a suspected burglar tried to hide and fend off officers from inside.
The incident began about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, when officers were dispatched to a burglary in progress at an apartment in the 1500 block of Eddingham Drive. An officer saw a broken window and a suspect near the back of the apartment and ordered the suspect to stop, Officer Derrick Smith said in an email. But the suspect ran and, after a brief foot chase, the officer lost sight of him.
A short time later, another officer checked a nearby business, Arby’s at 1533 W. 23rd St., and found out someone matching the suspect’s description had entered the bathroom there, Smith said. The officer found the bathroom door locked, and the suspect refused to come out, Smith said.
Smith said officers were able to unlock the door and, despite the suspect pushing against them from the inside, force it open and arrest the man. He was booked into jail on suspicion of burglary, theft and criminal damage to property.
