Andy Craig, the district did object to the rezoning that allowed the hotel at the corner of Overland and Wakarusa. I spoke at the city commission meeting specifically to object to the change. Unfortunately in that instance, the district was not made aware of the proposed change in zoning until after it had already been approved by the planning commission.

This information is on the district's webpage, and has been talked about repeatedly at our board meetings. Those meetings are televised by Knology, and are available for viewing at a later date at https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCDNfIy.... All of the information we discuss at our board meetings is provided to the LJW. Agendas and archived agendas, with supporting written materials, are available at http://www.usd497.org/site/Default.as....

It is highly unfair of Mr. Alexander or anyone else to criticize school board members or the superintendent for not attending last night, and I told him so after the event. I was not invited, and only found out about the presentation on Tuesday by accident through an acquaintance's Facebook feed. For that reason, neither Mr. Alexander nor the community should assume that any particular board or staff member's attendance has any bearing on our commitment as individuals or as a district to improving the educational opportunities and experiences of our students of color. I am glad that I had the opportunity to hear the presentations and community questions and discussion afterward, and encourage community members who had questions about what efforts the district is making to look at the resources available from the district at http://www.usd497.org/site/default.as.... Also, applications for the open board position and the district's equity advisory team are available on the district's home page, http://www.usd497.org/Page/1.

This WILL be on the ballot during a regularly scheduled election - local elections for city commissioners and three school board members will take place in April 2013. The district actually saves money by having the bond issue on the ballot at that time.

squeakcat - the Task Force recommended a set of schools for consideration based on the criteria we developed and the information we gathered throughout our 8-plus months of study. While our study was extensive, there were certain areas that the Task Force felt needed additional professional expertise and input--in particular, architects and construction professionals putting together thorough professional estimates for the maintenance/repairs/upgrades that are needed at the elementary school buildings. That is the additional information I was referencing in my response.
