Sound Off: Kemper teaching awards
Did I miss seeing coverage of the Kemper teaching awards this year? Usually the KU chancellor begins surprising recipients on first day of classes, but I haven’t read anything about the awards this year.
The William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence, or Kemper Awards, saw their final year in 2011. From the awards’ first year in 1996 until 2011, $1.55 million was given out as cash gifts to about 300 faculty members. Funding came from the Kemper Foundation and KU Endowment. In a 2012 statement, Kansas University Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little thanked the Kemper Foundation for its support and said she knew the awards were not meant to be permanent.
