Sound off: Geocaching
I heard Douglas County will be having a day to celebrate geocaching? What is geocaching and what’s the day all about?
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches.”
According to the city’s website, to celebrate GIS Day on Wednesday, Douglas County is holding a geocaching contest that runs until Monday with prizes available Wednesday at the Douglas County Courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets. About 25 geocaches are currently placed near cultural and scenic areas located throughout the county.
The geocaches are marked for easy identification but are not necessarily easily found. For details on the contest as well as a list of coordinates and clues visit douglas-county.com.
