Sound Off: Medication disposal

What does a person do with over the counter medicines that are no longer needed or have expired?

Some medications can be thrown out in the trash, though it’s recommended that medications be taken out of the bottles and mixed with an undesirable substance such as coffee grounds or cat litter, and be placed in a sealed plastic bag, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Flushing medications down the toilet is not recommended because of potential environmental effects.
There is also an annual Drug Take Back event in April in Lawrence, where people can drop off unused medications. The FDA recommends checking with your pharmacist if you have questions about a particular medication.

When I worked at Walmart Pharmacy, one of the pharmacists would flush all expired drugs down the toilet. Yikes.

Isn't the annual Drug Take Back Day only for prescription drugs, not OTC drugs?
