Sound Off: Kansas City name
Why is there a Kansas City, Mo., and a Kansas City, Kan.?
Kansas City, Mo., actually got to the name first, initially calling itself the City of Kansas (after the nearby Kansa Indians) upon its 1853 incorporation before transitioning to its current name in 1889. Around that time, Kansas civic leaders grouped several small river communities and called the resulting town Kansas City, hoping to bask in the glow of the booming city on the other side of the Missouri River.
