Sound Off: School district conference
What did the school district spend sending about 30 school teachers and administrators to Destin, Fla., at the beginning of June?
According to district spokeswoman Julie Boyle, the district spent a total of $44,800 to send 27 people to a professional learning symposium held June 12-15 at Destin Middle School in Florida. That included $35,000 in district funds for an administrator and three teachers from each of the middle schools and the Lawrence Virtual School. In addition, schools chose to use approximately $9,800 from their building funds to send seven additional teachers.
Assistant Superintendent Angelique Kobler added: “As part of the school board’s excellence, equity and engagement goals to increase student involvement and raise achievement, we want to continue to increase our staff’s knowledge and skills in working with young adolescents at the middle school level. This conference focused on student motivation, effective instruction, literacy, use of technology, classroom strategies and school leadership. We also require our attendees to develop plans for sharing their learning with their teams and building staffs.”
