Sound Off: Sign miles
On new U.S. Highway 59 at mile marker 145, just north of U.S. Highway 56, there is a sign that says Lawrence 14 miles. The actual mileage to the Lawrence city limits is only nine miles. Why the difference?
The sign on Highway 56 is incorrect, said Eric Nichol, state traffic signing engineer at the Kansas Department of Transportation. It should read “Lawrence 10” miles, but the actual distance is between nine and 10 miles. KDOT’s policy says that these signs should measure from the sign to the city limit or urban limit; however, this sign does not violate federal regulations. KDOT plans to replace the sign during its 10-year cycle of replacing reflective signs.
