Sound Off: What are the rules for businesses within a residential area? Is there a limit on the number of employees or the type of business that can be run in the home?
Megan Gilliland, the city’s communications manager, provided information for this answer: The city’s development code outlines the types of home businesses that are permitted in residential districts. It also identifies prohibited uses. Type B home businesses are permitted to have one nonresident employee and/or no more than 10 customer/clients come to the site. A permit must be obtained from the planning department. Examples of type B businesses permitted are counseling, tutoring and hair cutting/styling. Prohibited uses include vehicle/engine repair and dispatch centers. The entire section is available online: http://bit.ly/NJl1eK.
