Last spring, an outdoor tree sculpture was erected at an elm tree on the Kansas University campus. It appears the tree has died. Did the sculpture cause it? Are there any plans to remove the dead tree and sculpture?
“The Bedazzler,” the sculpture by North Carolina-based artist Patrick Dougherty, went up in May 2009, swirling and climbing around a dying elm tree at the intersection of 14th Street and Jayhawk Boulevard.
The sculpture was constructed of about 6,000 saplings that were sustainably harvested at Clinton Lake and then woven together into a structure surrounding the tree.
Bill Woodard, director of communications for Spencer Museum of Art at KU, said the tree now is dead — a victim of verticillum wilt. Woodard said there are plans to remove the tree when the sculpture comes down, which likely will be next spring or summer.
