What is the BCS?

BCS stands for the Bowl Championship Series. Polls and computer ratings are used to determine team rankings to fill spots in five bowl matchups in the NCAA Division One Football Bowl Subdivision. The top two teams play in a national championship game. The champions of the six BCS conferences (Big 12, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC) are guaranteed BCS bowl bids. The system has been in place since 1998.
