How long has the three-point line been recognized in basketball?


The shot was first adopted on a permanent basis by the American Basketball League in 1961, where it gained steam before becoming popularized by the American Basketball Association, which introduced the shot in 1968.
The National Basketball Association instituted a three-point shot starting with the 1979-80 season, setting the stage for its introduction into the college game shortly thereafter. In 1980, the NCAA’s Southern Conference became the first collegiate conference to adopt the rule, and a number of other conferences experimented with it until the NCAA eventually adopted the use of a 19-foot, 9-inch three-point line in 1986.
