Is the city using ground tires for mulch? If so, how successful has it been and how expensive? Also, where can it be obtained and seen, if it is being used?
Lawrence Parks and Recreation has used tires for surfacing under playgrounds at Clinton and HAND parks. Mark Hecker, city superintendent of parks and maintenance, said the material is fairly expensive. He said Parks and Recreation has applied for grants to do other playgrounds around town, though he said he wouldn’t know whether the department received the grants until mid-summer.
Hecker said Parks and Recreation has looked into using tires in landscape mulch, but it hasn’t been tried yet. He said he wasn’t aware of any other departments that have used tires in landscape mulch.
