Why haven’t we seen any black swallowtail butterflies this year?


“The butterfly season got off to a slow start this year,” said Orley “Chip” Taylor, director of Monarch Watch at Kansas University. “Cool weather in April and May slowed the population buildup of many species, including black swallowtails. However, due to favorable conditions over the last seven weeks, we can expect to see an abundance of butterflies, including black swallowtails, from late August through September.”
