What does it mean when the stock market is referred to as being “up or down” so many points?

It’s based on an index of a particular set of companies (Dow Jones Industrial, for example) and the sum of their aggregate capitalized value. Say the numeral 100 is used as the base value. The daily stock market activities of selling and buying stocks affects how many points up or down the capitalized value has gone from that base. Capitalized value is the market value of a company. Generally it’s good to see the points go up.
