Firebirds’ state baseball quarterfinal postponed until Friday

The Free State baseball team had to hit pause on its pursuit of a state championship.

Between lightning nearby and rain Thursday at Hoglund Ballpark on the University of Kansas campus, weather delays devastated the Class 6A state tournament schedule.

The first game of the quarterfinals — a 9-3 victory for No. 2 seed Blue Valley Northwest over Washburn Rural — completed without incident.

However, Derby’s 5-0 win over Olathe Northwest stalled for more than two hours in the bottom of the sixth because of storms in the area.

A little after 6:30 p.m., top-seeded Blue Valley’s tournament opener against Shawnee Mission Northwest hadn’t even begun due to another delay. So organizers elected to move the final two quarterfinals on the schedule to Friday.

Fourth-seeded Free State (16-6) is slated to take on No. 5 seed Haysville-Campus (15-7) at approximately 1:15 p.m., following the conclusion of Blue Valley versus SMNW (11 a.m.).

The postponements also led to alterations for the rest of the state tournament calendar. The two 6A semifinals will follow the quarterfinals, at about 3:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.

The state title game, originally planned for Friday evening, will be played Saturday at 10 a.m. The third-place game was canceled.
