Report: Kobach is on the board of a veterans group in which hardly any money goes to vets

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A business watchdog has found that only a small portion of money from a Missouri-based veterans' group that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach is associated with actually goes toward helping veterans.

Kobach is listed as a member of the advisory board for Veterans in Defense of Liberty, a Springfield-based nonprofit with a stated mission of upholding the Constitution, the Kansas City Star reported. Kobach is also running for governor of Kansas,

The Better Business Bureau released a report this week giving the group a failing grade because only a small fraction of the nonprofit's money goes toward veterans' issues.

"This is the first I've heard of any suggestion that the monies raised by the charity aren't going to the various causes for veterans," Kobach said Thursday.

The watchdog agency, which reviews the integrity of charities and businesses, began investigating the veterans' group after a Kansas man asked the bureau about a mailer he'd received asking for donations.

"This Sweepstakes is part of our efforts to fix the broken and corrupt Veterans Affairs Department," the mailer stated, according to the bureau. "We still have a lot of work to do to ensure that our sick, wounded and disabled veterans are provided with the quality health care they need and deserve.

But a review of the group's 2014 and 2015 filings with the Internal Revenue Service showed that 94 percent of the money donated to the group went to fundraisers, according to the bureau.

"When you donate to a cause, you want to make sure your money is going to help," said Michelle Corey, CEO of the bureau's St. Louis chapter. "With these mailers, it appears that the professional fundraisers who organize the campaigns are benefiting the most from contributions."

Kobach said he joined the group's board six years ago because he cares "deeply about veterans and veterans' issues." He said he would review the group's financial records to determine whether to cut ties with the organization.

Kobach cares "deeply" about breaking and corrupting the US Department of Veterans Affairs (correct name).

As Kobach also cares "deeply" about becoming KS' next Governor, he will no doubt make some magnanimous, but petty, resentful & vindictive, gesture to indicate he's no longer associated with this farce.

Where are Kobach's admirers? You know the ones who protest dragging a flag. I'd rather see someone dragging a flag, than cheating veterans.

I wonder if the conservatives on here will come and criticize him as much as they did, the board of Just Food?

I wonder if he was paid to be on this board or was it volunteer? If he was paid, then he needs to give all that money to a real veteran's group.

A very far right conservative once told me that vets are primarily black men and, he said, we all know they're a worthless bunch of street criminals. He mentioned them killing each other and that being a good thing.

But I grew up in the south, so it wasn't a Kansan who said it.

I only mention this because I believe this may be how Kobach sees vets, too. Ne'er do wells whose only recourse is to join the service, nothing nearly as special as KK, in his own mind.

Kris is concerned mostly about Kris and doesn't give a flap about ethics or rules or morals. He just wants to ride around and get his name in the paper by any means necessary. He is a failure of a chief election officer in this state. His job as SoS was to make voting easier and more accessible to all eligible voters. He has done the opposite. Now this. Cheaters never win and winners never cheat.

"cheaters never win." Look at what's in the Oval Office. Kobach is vile, but he's smart and really ambitious. He's going to be around for a while.

Okay, I'll go along with what you said. Where high office in any venture is concerned cheaters win all the time, and in fact it could be that's the only way most of them could win.

As for him being around for a while, you just runed my supper. Thanks! :)

I don't believe this is a new story. I'm sure I've read about their spending the donations on themselves for years. But when I read about it could have been a few years ago. I don't recall where I read it or when. So take this with a grain of salt.

However, too little, too late, Kobach. How much did you receive in perks for being on that board? And you never tried to be sure it was doing right by the vets? I think you're the most despicable Kansan in my lifetime and I'm not one bit surprised you'd take the perks and not do right by the vets and the people who donated to this scam.

What everyone's said about Kobach is true...and more. The man, his ambitions, his ethics...everything about him...is utterly despicable. I doubt there's another single human being who more fully embodies the absolute moral slime of politics, than Kris Kobach: so this is no defense of him, in any way.

That said, many "prominent" people lend their name to a lot of what they think are organizations championing "good" causes, without paying much attention to what the organization actually is, or does.

Kobach' being a "member of the advisory board" for the organization probably meant nothing more than that he was padding his "conservative" resume: for he surely recognized their "upholding the Constitution" as code-words (wink, wink) for his brand of anti-democratic "conservatism." And they were likewise using him to make their organization look legitimate.

I doubt Kobach knew, or cared, anything about what the organization was actually doing. On that one count, I imagine he's innocent. There are more than enough others on which he's guilty, so they seem more important to talk about.

But isn't it sweet to see a big-time con-artist get conned ?

Has been on the Board 6 years. 2014 and 2015 reports showed 6% going to Veterans. So, as a member of the Board he never looked at the books? I smell a rat. Yeah, great Govenor material.

That's Kobach !......Trumps kind of guy....... out to earn Trumps' respects........but how do you earn the respect of a guy who uses other people's money donated to his namesake cheritable foundation, to pay his own corporate fines ? ( self dealing from Cheritable Foundations is supposed to be illegal )

This is the Republican Party at work..........that is,.....when Kobach isn't out calling The League Of Women Voters or The ACLU to be communists !

" True Kansas CON........servatives at work........advising away and doing swell ? ? ?

Who is next at needing advice after Veterans ?........Widows and Orphans ? ? ?

On another note, don't give to a charity without first investigating them. Lots of fake ones out there. And they especially a lot of them seems to be pretending to support veteran. That's because people are really easy touches when it comes to supporting the veterans. There are plenty of good charities out there who help veterans. Give your money to them. And never donate to anything if you get a cold call. Never. Tell them to send you something, or just go out and find the safe charities, and you contact them with a donation. Here are some highly rated groups. in the first link there is an icon to go to the low rated ones.

Has anyone in Missouri investigated whether the so called outside funds solicitor service company(s) are real ? or have any records of doing any real verifiable activities or of paying employees todo such things ?

One way that criminals steal from for profit or non profit companies is to create false dumby "outside vendors" to be paid from a companies income, who are simply themselves posing as an outside service vendor, who provided imaginary services to the for or non profit company, who are presenting a bill that must normally be paid to them.......selves
for nothing of any real rendered value .

Who knows what is going on with this charity or who is on the board or acts as an advisor ?

Happiness Is ? ? ??.............apparently, somebody else's cheritable stream of money .

Sometimes it is just kind of hard to play dump but Kris is an experienced actor !

What is really funny is to try and use their cherity checker to find common local Lawrence, Ks. charities such as Just Foods or the local United Way .

Just Another Bogus Kansas State Computerized System that probably costs millions .

Considering that charities have to register with the SOSs office and that the above page link warns of "all sorts of whatever", you'd think that Kobach would have read up on the supposed Veterans Charity that he was supposedly advising.......or maybe he really was ADVISING THEM ?

Another Republican CON.......servative mystery !
