Editorial: We have met the enemy ...

Where should we direct our anger?

At the Russians, whose understanding of the political divides permeating America allowed them to skillfully and successfully manipulate millions of us into believing the worst about one another and perhaps altering the outcome of the 2016 election?

At social media giants Facebook and Twitter for being willing and compliant tools for Russian operatives, profiting off thousands of Russian-funded ads whose aim was to foment anger and divisiveness among millions of us with fake news and events?

At President Donald Trump, whose administration is under investigation for possibly colluding with the Russians in the 2016 election, for dismissing Russian interference as if it didn’t happen, for playing loose and fast with the truth and for continuously asserting that real news is fake news and vice versa?

At politicians on both sides of the aisle, who constantly attack each other and eschew compromise, bipartisanship and the challenges of governing for the comfortable electability offered by the politics of division?

Anger at any one or all of the above is understandable. The list is long of those who would deceive us to advance their own agendas.

But if we’re honest — if we truly want to hold accountable those responsible for our current state of civic stagnation — we must look inward. We have created the environment that allowed this to happen.

It’s not enough to disagree; we must vilify those who disagree with us. So entrenched are we in our own sociological and political ideologies, we not only think the worst of those with different ideologies, we actively seek stories that confirm our biases about others. Truth doesn’t matter — we believe such stories because we desperately want to believe them.

As consumers of information, we are not discerning and skeptical; instead, we settle for media that reinforce our viewpoints, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. We align ourselves with like-minded souls on social media and viciously, relentlessly and often anonymously, attack those who are not like-minded. In such an environment, how easy — and inexpensive — was it for the Russians to bait us into turning on each other?

The Russians ignited a new Cold War that they don’t have to fight. That’s because we have met the enemy, and he is us.

Duh. The congenital Liberal that creates fantasies. Trump dossier etc etc etc

Throughout the existence of mankind, these types of genetically influenced people have been the antithesis of the civilized community.

They hate. They suspect. They project. They are trouble.

Look at what these types of people have done to females...

Why don't you go put an ice pack on your overactive amygdala, Bob? After all, haven't scientists found that "liberal brains" have a larger anterior cingulate cortex while "conservative brains" have larger amygdalas? I can pathologize overactive amygdalas as easy as you can pathologize DRD4 polymorphism, so you'd better be careful, lest the amygdala police get out their calipers and come after you with a scalpel to cut yours down to size.

Your biological/genetic determinism is so misguided, so overly simplistic and pathologizes normal variation that is actually a tremendous benefit to society. Why do you insist on going down this slippery slope toward some kind of neo-eugenic dystopia?

Where is the anger toward Hillary for actually colluding with Russia to put together a very expensive dossier on Trump?

Or perhaps it should be directed toward the DNC that rigged the democratic primary to coronate Hillary?

Maybe if the DNC, Obama and Hillary didn’t rig the primary we’d had another real candidate to vote for and Trump wouldn’t be president.

Also, even if Trump did collide with Russia it isn’t a crime to do so.

Finally, keep in mind Obama colluded with Israelis to felt the outcome of their election and he did it with our tax dollars.

Your selective anger is indicative of a lack of principles and that is something we should be angry about.

Here is what I don't understand, if any of the "isms" is demonstrated, a wide swath of Americans will vigorously and vocally stand against it. Why is it we don't see wide-spread condemnation by the American Muslim community of Muslim terrorism?

Historically (and it is a long history) the Muslim religion and culture seems to strive to brutally eliminate religious and cultural competition. Muslim leaders speaking out, loud and long, against terrorism/extremism would make one believe they intend to embrace tolerance/diversity and assimilate into American society.

Immigration is what makes America strong and keeps it vibrant. What is different/missing today is the seeming lack of intent to assimilate by immigrants. Assimilation has been an important theme in America’s immigration history. Previous waves of immigrants and their children have been expected to support themselves in the economy, learn English, and become active participants in American society.

"All newcomers to the United States should be encouraged to integrate into American civil society. Unfortunately, government programs such as bilingual education in public schools and an undue emphasis on “multiculturalism” can actually retard the process of integration, to the detriment of immigrants and society." Gary, did you actually go to the CATO institute website and see what they are saying about multiculturalism? In the website's column titled "How to Defend Tolerance," they distinguish between legitimate celebration of cultural differences and traditions while clearly condemning cultural practices that violate principles of universal human rights, such as not recognizing the rights of women, or racial/cultural supremacy. I think that there is clearly room for conservative/liberal agreement on the principles outlined in that column, and it is a misinterpretation of this column to say that the CATO Institute thinks that there is too much multiculturalism in our schools in the way you seem to be implying there is.

And regarding Muslim tacit acceptance of extremist, anti-tolerance perspectives, does this mean that you also see the need to teach our school children about the Catholic Church's tacit acceptance of Nazi Germany's holocaust policies, various churches' roles in pogroms, ethnic cleansing campaigns etc. throughout history including our sad history with native tribes in North America? Of course I don' know of any religious tradition which doesn't have some of that blood on their hands. Secular traditions are the same, of course, not to appear biased about this multicultural practice!

Of course you can express a thought or concern, but if it's bigoted you're going to get called on it.

My point is the calling on American Muslims to denounce the act of fringe Muslims in this country (as if they are somehow even remotely responsible) is as absurd as asking for all white men to apologize for the Las Vegas shooting.

It is important as Gary pointed out that when someone is committing a heinous crime for a reason or trait or religion I share that I speak out not only to differentiate myself from them but also to lend support to the victims.

So yes, as a white person, when people hate in the name of the skin color I share, I feel it is important that I send a message that I condemn those people and they do not represent me. That is the point Gary made.

The editorialist is spot-on. Self-examination is the only way we keep ourselves honest, or sane. No one is immune to the deceptions that come at us, when we create the mechanisms of deception for ourselves.

Self-deception always takes the form that I (emphasize "I") am infallibly RIGHT. Absent self-examination, why would we ever think otherwise ? And being "right" confers sovereign power to judge what IS right, for everyone. When other people don't do as I (emphasize "I") know is RIGHT....they are the problem.

The definitive way to deal with problems is to eliminate them. Mass-murderers and warring nations prefer firearms. But problems can also be eliminated if people are made by MY political power to do what I (emphasize "I") know is RIGHT.

No doubt Sam Brownback sincerely believed his tax-plan would eliminate a problem. I'm sure Republicans in Washington have convinced themselves that their similar tax-plan will make America rich again. And the one certainty of our national life is that Donald Trump truly believes himself the world's, maybe history's, Greatest Man.

It's always a problem to give political power to the self-deluded: it convinces them that others agree they ARE right, and that their RIGHT is beyond question. Certainly not to be questioned by those it harms: they were, after all, the problem. And certainly not by themselves...the only opinion that actually matters to them.
