Couples announcements for May 2017




In celebration of Jerry and Charlotte (Patterson) Willis’ 60th wedding anniversary on June 1, their family would like to honor them with a card shower. The couple was married on June 1, 1957 in Wellington, KS. To­gether they moved to several locations until settling in Lawrence, KS in 1969. Upon retire­ment in 1991, they were able to move to their fa­vorite vacation spot, Grand Lake, Oklahoma. They enjoyed boating, golfing, and a relaxed lake life with their fam­ily. Jerry and Charlotte also loved to travel in their motorhome; espe­cially winters spent in Arizona. Jerry and Charlotte are the proud parents of one son, Jerry W. and Kathy Willis of Lawrence; three grand­ children, Elly and Cale Claussen of Lawrence, Emily Willis of Lawrence, and Daniel and Lauren Clausing of Manhattan; and two great­-grandchildren. Kenneth and Mary Margaret Rowen invite their friends to join in the celebration of their 60th wedding an­niversary and Ken's 90th birthday. A recep­tion will be held Sunday, May 28 from 2­ 4 PM at the West Cam­pus of First Methodist Church, 867 Hwy 40. The couple were mar­ried June 30, 1957 at the First Methodist Church in Miller, South Dakota.


Funk and Petrik

Doug & Kathy Funk of Lawrence, KS, formerly of Concordia, KS, are pleased to an­nounce the engagement of their daughter Haley Anne Funk to Taylor Lee Petrik, son of Rick & Danna Petrik, Topeka, KS. Haley is a 2008 graduate of Concordia High School, a 2013 graduate of Kansas State University receiv­ing her bachelor's de­gree in Business Management, and a 2017 graduate of the University of Kansas receiving her doctorate of pharmacy degree. Taylor is a 2009 graduate of Cair Para­vel Latin School in Topeka and a 2014 graduate of Kansas State University, re­ceiving his bachelor's degree in architectural engineering. He is cur­rently employed by Professional Engineer­ing Consultants, Fort Collins, Colorado. Haley will be em­ployed as a pharmacist with Walgreens in Den­ver, Colorado. A Lawrence wed­ding is being planned for October 21st, 2017.


Cheung and Staples

Teija Cheung and Ian Staples are pleased to announce their en­gagement. The couple, who have known each other since 9th grade, currently live in Wash­ington, D.C. Teija is a graduate of Free State High School and is the Private Dining Co­ordinator for Mindful Restaurant Group. She is the daughter of De­borah Peterson and Keith McMahon of Lawrence, KS. Ian is a graduate of Free State High School and the University of Kansas. He serves as a Congres­sional Military Legislat­ive Aide and Captain in the US Army Reserves. He is the son of Bill Staples and Lizette Peter of Lawrence, KS and Carol Warren and Kathi Kirigin of Coron­ado, CA. The couple is planning an October wedding in Lawrence.



Don and Sandra (Robbins) Nease were married at Dan­forth Chapel at the University of Kansas on June 2, 1957 by Reverend Albert Bramble. Friends and family of the couple are welcome to at­tend an open house to celebrate their 60th anniversary at the Chipperfield Clubhouse located at 2745 Chipperfield Road from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, June 3rd. Directions ­ turn right on 27th and Iowa, and left on Chipperfield Road. Please, no gifts.



Allen and Rosie Fowler, Linwood, KS will celebrate their 70th anniversary May 29, 2017. They were married in Lawrence in 1947. Allen retired from Kmart Distribution Center and Rosie retired from USD 497 Food Service. Allen and Rosie have two sons, David Fowler (deceased) and Michael Fowler of Lawrence, four granddaughters Melissa, Mary, Erin, and Reagan Fowler all of Lawrence and two great-grandchildren Ariyah Selleck and David Meyers.



In celebration of Al and Donna Kuhlman’s 60th wedding anniversary on June 1st, their family is encouraging friends and family to honor their special day with a card shower. Please send cards of congratulations to: Mr. & Mrs. Al Kuhlman, 3603 Yale, Lawrence, KS, 66049. The family celebrated earlier in the year with a ski trip to Colorado. They married June 1st, 1957, in Portland, IN, and moved to Kankakee, IL. In 1972, they moved to Topeka, KS, relocating to Lawrence, KS, in 1997. Al owned and operated Engineering Design Service in Topeka until 1997, retiringin 2002. Donna worked for Kmart Pharmacy for 22 years, and retired in 1997. Their children are Rhonda Eisenhart Froelich of Topeka, KS; Robyn and Casey Ford of Wakarusa, KS; Kevin Kuhlman of Las Vegas, NV; Tim and Michin Kuhlman, Henderson, NV; Todd and Lori Kuhlman, Charlotte, NC. They have six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.



Carl and Joyce Burkhead of Lawrence were married on June 2, 1957 in Kansas City, Missouri at the church where they first met when she was nine and he was eleven. In the mid-fifties, they fell in love while Carl was attending the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (now known as the Missouri School of Science and Technology) in Rolla, Mo. They were blessed with a son, Jeff Burkhead, and a daughter, Carla Joy Wilson (husband Tim) all now residing in Lawrence. Carl and Joyce moved to Lawrence in the 1960’s and Carl taught at KU for 34 years.They have also been blessed with seven terrific grandchildren and three special grandsons-in-law. In late June, their ninth delightful great grandchild is to be born. Most of their family now live in Lawrence! To celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary there will be a backyard family party on June 11th. Carl and Joyce are extremely grateful to God for these many years together.



On May 28, 2017, Ron and Carolyn Lang will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married on May 28, 1967 in Topeka, Kansas. Mrs. Lang is the daughter of the late Edwin and Melba Miller of Topeka. She worked at Kansas University for 30 years and retired from KU's Natural History Museum as the Office Manager and Events Coordinator. Mr. Lang is the son of the late Robert and Inez Lang of Leavenworth, Kansas. Ron is a retired Lawrence High School English teacher. They have two children, Shaun Lang, wife Luann and son Jackson of Los Angeles, California and daughter Errin Martinez, husband Ryan and two daughters, Angel and Allie.
