Couples announcements for May 2014




Bill and Thelma Simons are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. They were married on May 13, 1989, at the South Park Gazebo in Lawrence. Their romance began only three months earlier when Thelma, in her role as the singles group coordinator for First Christian Church, visited Bill in the hospital. His first romantic gesture was sending her Valentine flowers while he was still in the hospital. The two of them continue on their romantic ventures to this day and beyond. Bill and Thelma brought six children into their combined family and have been further blessed with six grandchildren. Bill is retired. Thelma is employed at KU.


Ferguson and Hightower

Kimberly Ferguson and Kevin Hightower are engaged to be married October 4, 2014. Kimberly is the daughter of Robb and Pam Ferguson, Lawrence, Ks and Kevin is the son of Kenny and Carolyn Hightower, La Cygne, Ks. Kimberly is a 2007 graduate of LHS and graduated from the KU School of Business in 2011with a B. S. in Management and Leadership. Kevin is a 2010 graduate of KSU with a B. S. in Agricultural Economics. Kim and Kevin will be married at the Clearfield United Methodist Church with a reception following.


Kaiser and Rieder

Nancy and Johnnie Kaiser of Hutchinson, Kansas are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Ann Kaiser, to Daniel James Rieder, son of Alicia and Roger Rieder of Lawrence, Kansas. The future bride is a graduate of Buhler High School and attended the University of Kansas and Neosho County Community College. Mary is employed by Brandon Woods Retirement Community of Lawrence as a Certified Nursing and Medication Aide. She is currently working towards a degree in Nursing with a focus on Radiology. The future groom graduated from Lawrence Free State High School and attended Johnson County Community College and the University of Kansas. Daniel is employed by RAR, Inc. of Lawrence. A November 8, 2014 wedding is planned at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence.


Noller and Wallace

Mr. and Mrs. Steven Noller of Lawrence, KS, announce the engagement of their daughter Alexandra Noller, to Christian Wallace, son of Danielle LaVeta, Lawrence, KS and Jon Wallace Bountiful, UT. The future bride will be attending KU School of Nursing at Kansas University Medical Center this Fall. The future groom attends the University of Kansas and will be attending KU School of Education this Fall. An April 2015 wedding is planned and the couple will live in Roeland Park, Kansas.


Campbell and Bender

Sally Rosanne Campbell, of Lawrence, and Joshua Adam Bender, of Sterling, were married amongst friends and family at The Cider Gallery in Lawrence, KS on March 22, 2014 with Reverend Arthur Jones, friend of the couple, officiating. The bride is the daughter of Scott and Leslie Campbell, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Mike and Diane Bender, Sterling. Bridal attendants were Amy Berg and Allison Diebolt. Groomsmen were Jared Bender, Ian Campbell, Rex Johnson and Jordan Bender. The ceremony was followed by a reception also at The Cider Gallery. The couple resides in Lawrence and plans to honeymoon to Europe in the fall.



Roy and Bonnie Taylor were married on June 17, 1954. They are celebrating their 60th Anniversary with an Open House in their honor on Sunday, May 25th, 2014 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., at the Chipperfield Club House, 2745 Chipperfield Road, Lawrence. Hosted by their children and grandchildren.


Hummert and Young

Erin Higgins Hummert and Garrett Burnett Young have announced their engagement. Erin is the daughter of Ray and Mary Lee Hummert of Lawrence. She is a graduate of Lawrence HS and holds degrees in Chemical Engineering and Medicine from the KU Schools of Engineering and Medicine, respectively. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina. Garrett is the son of Sherilyn and Gary Young of Concord New Hampshire. He is a graduate of Concord HS. Garrett has a degree in Urban History from the University of Pennsylvania where he was the Managing Editor for the Daily Pennsylvanian. Erin and Garrett met in 2010 during World Cup soccer games in South Africa while Erin was a physician with the Baylor International Pediatric Aids Initiative in Mbabane, Swaziland and Garrett was the program manager for the Access to Medicine Program with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) in Mbabane. Erin is currently a physician and associate professor at Bethel Teaching Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Garrett is the program manager for CHAI’s Health Financing program, helping the Ethiopian Health Ministry to improve the availability and efficiency of resources in health care delivery. They are planning a July 5, 2014 wedding at Woodend Sanctuary, Maryland Audubon Society, in Chevy Chase MD.


Berg and Sharp

Dale and Cheri Berg of Lawrence are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Grace Berg, to Michael James Sharp, son of Ron and Mille Sharp of Fort Scott, Kansas. The future bride is a 2006 graduate of Lawrence Free State High School. She is currently attending the Mary Grimes School of Nursing and will graduate with her RN degree next fall. The future groom is a 2002 graduate of Fort Scott High School. He is currently attaining a degree in History, and is working as a Certified Medication Aid in Lawrence. An August 2nd, 2014 wedding is planned at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence.


Miller and Lesser

The engagement of Alyssa Miller and Adam Lesser is announced by their parents, Scott and Laura Miller, Hutchinson, and Christopher and Rita Lesser, Lecompton. The wedding is planned for June 14 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. The bride-elect graduated from Buhler High School and attends Kansas State University, majoring in Dietetics and Nutrition and Health. The bridegroom-elect graduated from Shawnee Heights High School, Topeka, and K-State with a degree in Secondary Education Science. He works at USD 305, Salina South High School.


Burdick and Smith

Logan Smith and Sasha Burdick are getting married today, May 31, 2014, at Wyandotte County Lake Park. Parents of the bride are Nan Moore of Kent, Ohio, and Paul Burdick of Akron, Ohio. Parents of the groom are Sandra Sanders and Frank Hoffman, and Eric Smith and Patricia Roach Smith, all of Lawrence. Sasha studied Creative Writing and Mandarin Chinese at Ohio Wesleyan and Peking universities before working as an editor and translator in Beijing. After moving to Lawrence, she earned her MS in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kansas. Logan earned a degree in Math and Physics from St. Olaf College and is a graduate student in Electrical Engineering at KU. He has been involved in the Center for Geophysical Studies of Ice and Climate at St. Olaf and the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets at KU, doing research in Greenland and Antarctica. Jim and Dorothy Congrove were married June 7th, 1964 at the North Baptist Church in Ottawa, KS. Jim is from Effingham, KS and Dorothy (Glanville) from Ottawa, KS. They met in Manhattan while they were students at Kansas State University. Jim worked for the Extension Service in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri before the family moved to Lawrence in 1973. They farmed northeast of Lawrence in Douglas County for many years. Jim then worked for the Department of Agriculture in Topeka and Dorothy worked in the office of Warren-McElwain Mortuary. They celebrated the anniversary at their farm home with their children and grandchildren. Son Tim and Sara Congrove, Lake Quivira, KS and children Spencer, Zachary, Chase, Maggie; daughter Kerri and Steve Weber, Frisco, TX and children Jeremy and wife Kenna, Morgan, Hannah; and son Andy and Suzanne Congrove, Shawnee, KS and children Jake, Luke.
