Charles and Peggy, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary later this month with family. Charles Tidd and Winifred (Peggy) Swain were married at the home of Bud and Helen Best November 2nd 1963. Charles worked 32 years for Kansas University and retire in 1995. Peggy worked 40 years as a cashier and retired from Hy-Vee #2 in February 2013. The couple have a son, Terry C. and his wife Lesa; 2 granddaughters, Heather Brethelsen and husband Jacob; Kirsten Tidd, a student at Fort Hays State University; and a puppy named Jack.
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired Army) Jim & Joyce Berry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 14, 2013. They were married in Pittsburg, KS & met when they attended Pittsburg Sr High School. Jim is the son of Ralph “Wild Red” Berry, professional wrestler, & followed in his fathers’ footsteps for a short time prior to his entrance in the United States Army. Jim & Joyce were stationed in many places during his 20-year military career, including Missouri, France, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, California, & Kansas. Jim also served tours in Korea & Vietnam where he was awarded The Bronze Star. Jim graduated from Pittsburg State & holds masters’ degrees in education & business administration. His military education includes the Command & General Staff College. After his retirement from the Army, he was a Special Agent for the Department of Defense & later the Sr. Military Instructor for the Military Magnet High School in Kansas City. Joyce considers herself a homemaker, care provider for her three grandchildren but was also a seamstress & Creative Memories Consultant for many years. Jim & Joyce have three children together; Jamie, Diana & Daniel & three grandchildren. The couple maintain homes in Lawrence & Pittsburg KS.
Dunfield and Thompson
Lee Dunfield (LHS class of 2001) and Amanda Thompson were married on July 6, 2013 at the Chapel in the Ohio Village of the Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, OH. Parents of the bride are Marty and Carol Stromer of Columbus, parents of the groom are Pat Graham and David Dunfield of Lawrence. The couple, both registered architects, reside in Cincinnati, OH.
Paquin and Wells
Christine Paquin, daughter of Terry and Bob Paquin of Shelburne, Vermont, and Nat Wells, son of Bonnie and Kim Wells of Lawrence, were married on October 12 at the All Souls Interfaith Gathering in Shelburne. Judge Paul Oetken of the Federal District Court in New York officiated. The wedding ceremony was followed by a reception at the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain on the Burlington, Vermont waterfront. Christine and Nat met at Dartmouth College from which both graduated in 2009. Christine received her law degree from Duke University in 2012 and until September served as a law clerk to Judge Oetken. She is an associate with the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell. Nat is an associate for credit risk management at Goldman Sachs. The couple resides in New York City.
Crawford and Trayer
Sandra Crawford and the late Lawrence Crawford of West Des Moines, IA, announce the engagement of their daughter, Caroline Elizabeth Crawford, to Bryan Wesley Trayer, son of Kathy Trayer of McCune, KS. Caroline graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 2000. She graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2004. Caroline received a Master of Social Welfare degree from the University of Kansas in 2006. Bryan graduated from Parsons High School in 1998 from Parsons, KS. He graduated from Pittsburg State University in 2007. Bryan received a Master of Business Administration from Baker University in 2011. Caroline is employed at KVC Behavioral Healthcare as an outpatient mental health therapist in Lawrence, KS. Bryan is employed as a store manager of Walgreens in Shawnee, KS. A May 3rd 2014 wedding is planned at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence, KS.

Patricia Ann Kimminau and Michael Francis Lechtenberg married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wichita, Kansas on Saturday, November 30, 1963 and will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, November 30, 2013. The couple will celebrate with family and faith community by sharing marriage promises at the 4:30 pm liturgy at St. John Catholic Church. A family dinner will follow at Lawrence Country Club. The bride is a 2009 graduate of Lawrence High School and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and a Minor in Dance, at San Francisco State University and will be graduating in May. The groom is a 2007 graduate of Lawrence High School and graduated in 2011 from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Education in Sports Management and a Minor in Business. He currently works at California Community Opportunities as their Executive Assistant. The couple currently resides in Campbell, California and is planning a wedding to take place at South Park in downtown Lawrence in October 2014.

Elizabeth Brooke Hyler and Jesse Esser Vahsholtz were married on Sunday, September 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Elizabeth is the daughter of Eric and Linda Hyler, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Dennis and Annetta Vahsholtz, Herington. Reverend Tom Brady officiated with Deacon Richard Kramer of Herington assisting. During the ceremony, the couple poured sand from beaches they have visited into a unity container. A choir of the bride and groom’s friends sang Marry Me to much applause by the audience. The bride was attended by her sister Alexandra Hyler, Blacksburg, Virginia, as maid of honor. Bridesmaids included friends Priya Mishra, Kansas City, and Ginny Armstrong, Chicago, Julie Tamasese, cousin of the groom, Honolulu, and Ginger Mellgren, St. Petersburg. The groom was attended by his cousin Evan Reser of Topeka. His cousin Grant Reser, who lost his fight with cancer, was an honorary best man. Other groomsmen included his brothers, Ned Vahsholtz and Alex Vahsholtz, both of Herington, and friends Derrick Lund, Kansas City, and Matt Wolff, Lawrence. Candle lighters were cousins of the bride, Angela Kocinski, Brunswick, Ohio, and Daniel Cox, Leawood. Ushers were Brad DeVault, cousin of the groom, Houston, Sami Tamasese, cousin-in-law of the groom, Honolulu, Ryan Akers, cousin of the bride, Carrollton, Texas, and friends Dustin Hicks Stuart, Florida, Graig Mickelson Grain Valley, Missouri, and Brian Sparks Kansas City. Flower girl was Emma Mickelson, Grain Valley, friend of the groom, and the ring bearers were cousins of the bride, Terry Akers, Haysville, and Brayden Adams, Olathe. The musicians were Dan Abrahamson, organist, and guitarists, Mitch Jordan and Jeff McKee, cousins of the groom. Following the ceremony, a reception was held at Maceli’s where the tables were decorated with blue hydrangea in vintage silver containers from family members. Throughout the wedding ceremony items of sentimental value were incorporated including the handkerchief the bride carried. It was brought home by Elizabeth’s grandfather, Harry Royer, of Fort Scott after WWII to his wife. It read “Philippines 1945.” The bride’s gold nugget necklace was made from her Great-Great Grandmother Caroline “Carrie” Schneider Royer’s wedding band. Elizabeth’s floral bouquet included several of her Grandmother Royer’s broaches. She wore a lucky six-pence in her left shoe brought home from England by sister Alexandra. At the reception the couple was toasted with champagne - the bottles having been dipped in chocolate for a sweet treat. The groom’s cake included a disc golf basket and disc with an original bridal logo designed by the bride. This disc was used to send the garter sailing. After the couple’s first dance, the Esser family’s traditional grand wedding march was lead by Jane Nelson and Dr. Joe Desch. Following a German tradition, trays of bologna, bread, and cheeses were shared at the end of the evening. The day prior to the wedding the groom hosted a disc golf tournament at the Centennial Disc Golf Park that was designed by his father and a Meet and Greet Party was hosted by the groom’s parents at the Spring Hills Suites. Following the wedding, the bride’s family hosted a brunch for departing guests. The bride graduated from Lawrence High School in 2004 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from Kansas State University in 2009. She is a Assistant Manager and in-store Designer at Crate and Barrel and does free-lance graphic design work on the side. The groom is the son of Dennis and Annetta Vahsholtz of Herington. He is a 2000 graduate of Herington High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Strategic Communications from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas in 2005. He is an Account Supervisor at PP+K, Inc., an advertising agency in Tampa, and a co-owner of Millennium Golf Discs. Following a honeymoon in Italy, the couple resides in Tampa.
Kuhlman and Olbert
Amy L. Olbert and Timothy D. Kuhlman were united in marriage on July 27, 2013 at Grace Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lawrence with Pastor Bill Vogler officiating. A reception was held following the ceremony at the Fraternal Order of Police in Kansas City KS. The bride is the daughter of Bill and Phyllis Olbert of Kansas City Ks. The groom is the son of Dan and Leah Kuhlman of Lecompton KS. The matron of honor was Kelly Dvorak, sister of the bride. Attendants were Joelle Teeter, Emily Lange, Angie Otting and Brandi Priddy. The best man was Matt Kuhlman, brother of the groom. Groomsmen were James Cook, Scot Lange, Greg Regier and Ryan Upson. The bride is a 2006 graduate of Sumner Academy and graduated from UMKC in 2012 with a degree in music. She is employed at Farmers Insurance in Olathe and is also a voice teacher at Music House School of Music in Overland Park. The groom is a 2005 graduate of Free State High School and graduated from Kansas State University in 2010 with a degree in education. He is a physics teacher at Lawrence High School. The couple reside in Lenexa.
Martha and Ralph Gage recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a dinner with family and friends at the Adams Alumni Center. Martha Ann Senter and Ralph D. Gage Jr. were married Nov. 23, 1963, at the First Baptist Church in Ottawa. Ralph retired in August after more than 40 years with The World Company, where for many years he was chief operating officer. He continues to be a member of the company’s board of directors. Prior to that he worked at newspapers in Salina, Kan., and East St. Louis, Ill. Martha retired earlier after a career in education. She taught elementary school in Salina and later headed the education department at Ottawa University, where she worked 15 years, taught at Mid-America Nazarene University, and was head of the teacher education and licensure department at the Kansas State Department of Education, where she worked for 10 years. The Gages have two children, Susan, Tualatin, Ore., and Paul, Washington, D.C., and two grandchildren, Sam and Abby, of Tualatin.
Weigel and Gordy Berquist
Thirteen years after meeting in their 4th grade classroom, Aileen Gordy Berquist and Adam Patrick Weigel rediscovered each other while working for Headquarters Counseling Center in Lawrence, KS. Adam proposed to Aileen while she was flying a plane over Clinton Lake, after which the couple took separate flights to different corners of the world to pursue their interests in public service and exploring different cultures. Aileen is a Peace Corps volunteer working with at risk youth in rural Africa to reduce the rates of HIV/AIDS transmission and promote Life Skills. Adam is teaching English at a school in the Patagonia region of Chile. After their tours have ended, the couple will pursue further education in Bilingual and Bicultural Education and plan to work with immigrant populations in the United States. Aileen is the daughter of Dr. Kent and Dena Berquist, and Adam is the son of Maure and Theresa Weigel and grandson of Margene and Harris Clark.

A reception was held there immediately following. The bride is the daughter of Jim and Liz Harper, of Perry, KS. The groom is the son of Jim and Mary Guffey, of Perry, KS. The matron of honor was Sara Dreher, sister of the bride. Attendants were Bridget Guffey-Acker and Kelci Bouray. The best man was Jim Guffey, father of the groom. Groomsman were Steven Morrison and Logan Hurd. The bride is a 2002 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 2007 and Baker School of Nursing in 2012. She is currently employed as a registered nurse at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. The groom is a 2005 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School. He works for New Earth Lawn and Landscape and also works as a professional waterfowl hunting guide in central and northeast Kansas. The couple reside in Lawrence.

Kristy Johnson, daughter of Larry and Peggy Johnson, and James Sheler, son of Cliff and Patty Sheler, were married on June 15th, 2013 at Maceli’s in Lawrence, Kansas. The reception followed immediately after at Maceli’s. James and Kristy currently reside in Olathe, Kansas. James currently works as an engineer for Union Pacific based out of Kansas City, and Kristy is currently a clinical pharmacist working in Lenexa, Kansas.
