Mary and Elton Haid, Lawrence, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today. Mary Pearson and Elton Haid were married Oct. 6, 1962 in Topeka. Mary grew up in Baldwin, and met and married Elton while working in Topeka. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Lawrence where they worked for many decades. Elton retired from a career in printing. Mary retired after a long career in banking and currently volunteers in the LMH gift shop. Harold and Jeanne Longaker will celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary on the 7th of October. The couple were married Oct. 7, 1954, in Warrensburg, Mo. They lived in Topeka until 1978 when they moved to Lawrence. Harold is retired from the Topeka Police Department. Jeanne is retired from the KU Police Department. She now works for Meals on Wheels. They have five children, Mark of Lake Perry, Vicki of Topeka, Debbie of Topeka, Valita of Lawrence, and Mary of Lawrence. They have 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. No gifts - just cards.

The bride earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Nankai University in Tianjin, China and a Masters of Science in International Shipping and Logistic Management from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She is employed by Odebrecht Construction in Shanghai. The groom earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Middlebury College. He is employed by EXSIF Worldwide in Shanghai. After a honeymoon trip to Bali, the couple resides in Shanghai, China.

Lyle and Merle Frye, McLouth, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Merle DeBoard and Lyle Frye were married Oct. 27, 1942 at the Church of the Nazarene in Newark, Ohio, by the bride’s father, the Rev. F.N. DeBoard. Lyle served in the military for 33 years and the Lawrence postal service for 30 years. Merle was a die-cut operator for many years at Hallmark Cards, and a daycare operator for many years, both in Lawrence. They have lived in McLouth for 21 years and are members of the McLouth Nazarene Church. They have three children, Carolyn Bond, Lecompton; David Frye and spouse Debi, Oskaloosa; and Cindy Pennel, Oskaloosa; 12 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. An open house reception is planned at First Christian Church in Lawrence on Sunday, October 28, from 2:30 to 4:00 PM to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Victor and Carol Carr. Victor Carr and Carol Soendker met while attending an adult Sunday School class, and were married October 20, 1962, in Kansas City, Missouri. They moved to Lawrence in 1964. Victor was employed as a printing pressman at Allen Press and Meseraull Printing, Lawrence, and at Mainline Printing, Topeka. He also operated his own printing and engraving business at home for over 20 years. Carol served as Director of Children’s Ministries at Plymouth Congregational Church for 10 years, followed by 10 years of service as church secretary at First Christian Church. She was then employed by the Lawrence area office of the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, and received recognition for 10 years of employment in 2002. In addition to church activities, both Victor and Carol were involved in KU international student programs for many years, and enjoyed meeting students from all over the world. The Carrs have two daughters, Gayla Carr Schmitz and husband Mark Schmitz, and Linda Carr Pickerel and husband Mark Pickerel. Grandsons are Matthew and Alex Pickerel. Frank and Rachel Purvis, Lawrence, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June with their sons and their families: Mark and Shannon, Novato, California; Dwight and Kimberly, Neal and Jenny of Lawrence. They have six grandchildren, Michael, Joshua, Aria, Alison, Kate and Courtney. They were married on November, 1, 1952, in the Methodist Church in Kanorado, Kansas by the Reverend B.R. Harris. Frank is a retired teacher of choral and band music in Kansas public schools and Rachel retired from twenty-four years of employment at the University of Kansas. They have resided in Douglas County for fifty- five years.
Bruce and Joan Snodgrass recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner. Bruce Snodgrass and Joan Elliott were married October 4, 1952, in Humboldt, where they both graduated from Humboldt High School in 1951. Bruce served in the Army from 1953 to 1955, then graduated from Chanute Junior College. He was a building inspector for the Kansas State Architect’s Office for eight years in Topeka, then an inspector at the University of Kansas for two years. Since then, he has been self-employed and farming. Joan was formerly employed at Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and the Monarch Cement Co. She is a housewife and helps run the family business. They have four children and twelve grandchildren. Their children are David and Cindy Snodgrass of Lansing, Rick and Julie Miller, Bill and Karla Fleming and Dennis and Denise Snodgrass, all of Lawrence.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Bethel College in 2009. She is currently working on a Master of Science degree in counseling at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, AR, and is a Graduate Assistant at the CARE Clinic in Siloam Springs. The groom is a 2004 graduate of Parsons High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 2009 from Bethel College and is a Mental Health Paraprofessional at Ozark Guidance, Springdale, AR. The couple reside in Siloam Springs.

The future bride is a 1999 graduate of Lawrence High School, earned a BA in English from the University of Kansas in 2004, and a BA in Spanish from Portland State in 2012. The future groom is the son of Richard and Pam Ness of Valley View, Texas. He is a 1997 graduate of Pilot Point High School, earned a BA in Management Information Systems from the University of Texas-Arlington in 2002, and an Associates Degree from the Dallas Art Institute in 2003. He is the owner of a web and graphic design company. Shelby and Levi will be taking a 4 month, pre-wedding trip to South America. A July 2013 wedding is planned in Portland.
