Arlene and Leland “Pete” Lawson, Eudora, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a reception March 7 at Eudora Medicalodges. Pete Lawson and Arlene Westerhouse, high school sweethearts, were married March 7, 1942, at the Eudora Methodist Church parsonage. He entered the U.S. Navy in May 1942 and served in the South Pacific for 17 months as a guard on Tinian Island, where atomic bombs were assembled. After the war, he worked as a mechanic for Rothberger Chevrolet, later to become Broers Chevrolet. When the dealership was sold, he and Raymond Warmker opened Pete & Ray’s Garage at the same location. After Ray died, the business became Pete’s Parts and Service until 1975. He later worked at the Kansas University maintenance garage until retiring in 1986. Pete was a volunteer fire chief in Eudora and an Auxiliary policeman for Douglas County. Arlene was a homemaker and seamstress, who later worked at J. C. Penneys and the Douglas County Courthouse. She also was the Eudora city clerk, retiring after 25 years. They have a son, Ken and wife Sharon; a daughter, Kaye Spitzli and husband John, all of Eudora; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Lorna and Virgil Ball, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Sunday. Lorna Brillhart and Virgil Ball were married March 8, 1952, in Huntsville, Ark. The couple grew up in Mapleton and eloped in Huntsville. Lorna has been a life long homemaker. Virgil worked at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant, Stokely’s, and more than 31 years at Goodyear before retiring in 1988. They have two daughters, Debra Fornelli and husband Gary, and Barbara Ball; and two sons, Larry, all of Lawrence; and Darryl and wife Elma, Ozawkie; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Babcock and Gunter
Jocelyn Babcock and Travis Gunter, both of Merriam, were married Sept. 10, 2011, at a private villa, in Carmel Valley, Calif., with Stan Hazlett officiating. The bride is the daughter of Don Babcock, Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Susan and John Esau, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Steve and Terry Gunter, and Melissa Gunter, all of Shawnee. Maids of honor were Elizabeth Hazlett and Jessica Babcock. Best man was Tony Sebben. Bridesmaids were Courtney Gunter, Jessica Reed and Allison Larsen. Groomsmen were Mike Reed and Steve Slaughter. Valets and ushers were Curtis Wood, Jake Esau, Justin Esau and Pete Esau. Guestbook and program attendants were Nicole Garber and Brooke Patton. Reader was Katy Belot. A reception followed at the villa. The bride is a 2000 graduate of Free State High School and a 2005 graduate of Kansas University. She is the assistant director of accounting for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. The groom is a 1997 graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and a 2003 graduate of KU. He is a LEED certified architect with Slaggie Architects in Kansas City, Mo. The couple reside in Merriam.
Robertson and Gudde
Mark and Rosie Robertson announce the engagement of their daughter, Katie Robertson, all of Lawrence, to Dustin Gudde, Parsons. The future bride is a graduate of Lawrence High School and Bethel College. She is pursuing a master’s degree in counseling and plans to graduate spring 2013. She is a graduate assistant at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. The future groom is the son of Steve and Shelley Gudde, Parsons. He is a graduate of Parsons High School and Bethel College. He is an adult case manager at Labette Center for Mental Health Services in Parsons. The couple plan a March 24, 2012, wedding at St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Baldwin City.
Bertels and Kaufman
Terry and Alice Bertels, Topeka, along with Doug and Peggy Kaufman, Hutchinson, announce the engagement of their children, Emily Bertels, Topeka, and Jesse Kaufman, Hutchinson. The future bride is a 2005 graduate of Washburn Rural High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in art in 2009, and a master’s degree in social work in 2011, both from Kansas University. She is a social worker at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. The future groom is a 2001 graduate of Nickerson High School in Hutchinson. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from KU in 2007 and is an information specialist at KU. The couple plan a June 23, 2012, wedding at The Eldridge Hotel.
