Sue and Paul Schuster, Lawrence, will celebrate their 25th anniversary with family on March 10. The couple were married March 9, 1987, in Garnett. Sue is a long-time employee for the State of Kansas and is currently serving as a long term care social work consultant at the Kansas Department on Aging. She graduated from the School of Social Welfare at Kansas University. Paul served in Vietnam and studied at Kansas State University. He has held roles with the Union Pacific Railroad, The United States Postal Service and is employed at a Dillons store in Lawrence. The couple have three daughters, Miranda Wilhelm and husband Michael, Edwardsville, Ill., Amy Aber and husband Jeremy, Manhattan, and Emily Schuster, Lenexa; a son, Charles “Chuck” Schuster, Burlington; and one grandchild. Lawson

Arlene and Leland “Pete” Lawson, Eudora, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a reception March 7 at Eudora Medicalodges. Pete Lawson and Arlene Westerhouse, high school sweethearts, were married March 7, 1942, at the Eudora Methodist Church parsonage. He entered the U.S. Navy in May 1942 and served in the South Pacific for 17 months as a guard on Tinian Island, where atomic bombs were assembled. After the war, he worked as a mechanic for Rothberger Chevrolet, later to become Broers Chevrolet. When the dealership was sold, he and Raymond Warmker opened Pete & Ray’s Garage at the same location. After Ray died, the business became Pete’s Parts and Service until 1975. He later worked at the Kansas University maintenance garage until retiring in 1986. Pete was a volunteer fire chief in Eudora and an Auxiliary policeman for Douglas County. Arlene was a homemaker and seamstress, who later worked at J. C. Penneys and the Douglas County Courthouse. She also was the Eudora city clerk, retiring after 25 years. They have a son, Ken and wife Sharon; a daughter, Kaye Spitzli and husband John, all of Eudora; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Ball

Lorna and Virgil Ball, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Sunday. Lorna Brillhart and Virgil Ball were married March 8, 1952, in Huntsville, Ark. The couple grew up in Mapleton and eloped in Huntsville. Lorna has been a life long homemaker. Virgil worked at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant, Stokely’s, and more than 31 years at Goodyear before retiring in 1988. They have two daughters, Debra Fornelli and husband Gary, and Barbara Ball; and two sons, Larry, all of Lawrence; and Darryl and wife Elma, Ozawkie; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Owen

Ellyn and David Owen, Baldwin City, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lawrence. A trip is planned for June. Ellyn Evarts and David Owen met while students at the University of Colorado, Boulder. They were married June 9, 1962, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lakewood, Colo. The groom’s father, the Rev. George B. Owen, and the Rev. Norman Middleton officiated. David worked as a cartographer, making road maps and atlases for General Drafting, Convent Station, N.J., for five years. He then joined McGraw-Hill Book Company as a college level representative, where he sold books and procured manuscripts, for 26 years. In retirement, David has been involved with Trinity Environmental Stewardship Team and is presently chair of the Kansas Interfaith Power and Light, an organization devoted to educating faith groups about environmental stewardship and advocating for sustainable energy policies. Ellyn has held many different volunteer positions with Trinity Episcopal Church and Girl Scouting. She remains an instructor of beginning Girl Scout leaders. In the past, she taught middle school and later worked as a substitute teacher in Lawrence. The couple have two daughters, Heather McGee and husband Murray, Beloit, and Jennifer Bravo and husband Daniel, Seattle; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Mike Cater and Barbara Hook are high school sweethearts. They were married March 16, 1962, at the Quenemo Baptist Church parsonage with the Rev. Art Sims officiating. Mike was a 30-year employee of King Radio-Honeywell International Corporation of Olathe. Barbara was a homemaker and worked briefly for King Radio in Ottawa. They have three sons, Michael Jr. and wife Chris, Osawatomie, Arthur Raymond and partner Alyson, Lawrence, and Steven and wife Rebecca, Benton, Ark.; two daughters, Teresa Cater and partner Charmine, Lawrence, and Janette Funk and husband Loren, Lecompton; and nine grandchildren.

Frances graduated from Lecompton Rural High School in 1949 and attended the first combined class of the Stormont-Vail (Christ’s Hospital) School of Nursing. She later worked for Lawrence Memorial Hospital as a medical transcriptionist for 40 years. She has taught piano for over 50 years. Earl graduated from Lecompton Rural High School in 1947 and attended Kansas State University. He worked for Pippert’s Automotive as a jobber salesman for 40 years. They have two sons, Howard and wife, Barb, Lincoln, Neb., and Bret and wife Ruthann, Lecompton; a daughter, Janie McPherson and husband Matt, Lawrence; and four grandchildren.
