Severa and Varberg
Kathy and Dan Severa announce the engagement of their daughter, Kaela, to Joseph Varberg, son of Linda and John Varberg, all of Lawrence. The future bride is a 2008 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 2012 graduate of Rockhurst University. The future groom is a 2007 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 2011 graduate of Rockhurst University. They are currently attending the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis where Kaela is pursuing a Ph.D. in Physiology, and Joseph a Ph.D. in pharmacology. The couple plan a December 28, 2012 wedding at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence.
Chang and Eriksen
Michael and Shirley Chang, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their son, Ken Chang, to Whitney Eriksen, daughter of Jeff and Marla Eriksen, Hutchinson. The future bride is a graduate of Hutchinson High School and the University of Kansas. She is the Coordinator of Special Programs and Asia Pacific Region for People to People International in Kansas City, Mo. The future groom is a graduate of Lawrence High School and the University of Kansas. He is a Business Systems Analyst for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, Kansas City, Mo. Nicolas and Ulbrick
Carmel Nicolas and Malcolm Ulbrick were married in a beachfront ceremony at sunset in Tamarindo, Costa Rica on November 10, 2012. Bradley Kraushaar, friend of the couple, officiated before 50 of their close friends and family. Ms. Nicolas, who will be taking her husband’s name, is the daughter of Arme and Lito Nicolas of San Francisco, CA. She is a graduate of West High in Tracy, CA and attended college in San Diego. She is employed by Zola Beverage Co. of San Francisco. Mr. Ulbrick, the son of Elizabeth and George Ulbrick, Lawrence, is a graduate of LHS, the Colorado College and the University of Sydney (AU). He teaches vocal performance at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and sings professionally. The couple will make their home in Boulder, CO.
Penzler and Ozorkiewicz
Craig and Cindy Penzler, announce the engagement of their daughter, Clarice “Claire” Penzler, all of Lawrence, to Brian Ozorkiewicz, Fayetteville, North Carolina. The future bride is a 2006 graduate of Free State High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kansas University in 2012 and is employed by MySmartPlans in Kansas City, MO. The future groom is the son of Joseph Ozorkiewicz, Denver, CO and Ann Ozorkiewicz, Lawrence. He is a 2004 graduate of Free State High School. He is finishing a degree at Kansas University while he is employed as a combat medic. The couple plan a May 26, 2013 wedding in Lawrence.
Dennis and Sarmiento
Wayne and Elizabeth Dennis of Eudora, KS are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Madison Marie Dennis, to Joseph Preston Sarmiento, son of Jerry Sarmiento and Alisa Sarmiento, both of Wichita, KS. A December 28, 2012 wedding is planned. Madison will graduate from Pittsburg State University in 2013. Joe is a 2011 graduate of Pittsburg State University. He is currently a lieutenant in the United States Army. The couple will reside at Fort Drum, New York.
Penzler and Randall
Caroline “Callie” Penzler and Jess Randall, Phoenix, AZ, were married June 7, 2012, at the Ritz at Bachelor Gulch, Beaver Creek, CO, with a friend of the groom, Marcus Austenfeld, officiating. The bride is the daughter of Craig and Cindy Penzler, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Thomas and Kise Randall, Paola. Bridal attendants were Claire Penzler and Kristen Dixon. Groomsmen were Spencer and Will Randall. The couple honeymooned in Belize and were welcomed home with a reception at Lawrence Country Club on June 16, 2012. Callie is a fifth grade teacher in the Kyrene School District, Tempe, AZ. Jess is a pediatrics resident at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Miles and Horne
David Miles, Baldwin City, and Deanna Finger, Larned, announce the engagement of their daughter, Clare Miles, to Kaleb Horne, son of Tim and Angie Horne, all of Baldwin City. The bride-to-be graduated from Baldwin High School in 2009. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University. The future groom graduated from Baldwin High School in 2007. He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness from Kansas State University. Karl and Twilla (Knabe) Eisele, Ottawa, KS, will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a reception from 2pm to 4pm December 30th, 2012 at Celebration Hall 220 W 17th St, Ottawa, KS, hosted by their children and grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts. They have been blessed with three children, Russell and Stacey Eisele, Overland Park, KS, Loren and Yami Eisele, Bartlesville, OK, and Edwin and Casee Eisele, Olathe, KS. They have 6 grandchildren, Cortlyn, Faith, Brin, Spenser, Lance and Trent Eisele. Karl and Twilla Eisele were married on December 30, 1962 at Hesper Friends Church, Eudora, KS.
Frank (Fritz) and Joan Reiber were married on September 14, 1952 in Bradenton, Florida, where they both attended high school. They attended Florida State University with Fritz earning a BA degree in 1953, a MA in 1964, and Joan a BS in 1964. In 1964 they came to Lawrence, KS when Fritz joined the Design Department at the University of Kansas. He also designed books for the University Press of Kansas. Joan received her MA degree from KU in 1972 and served as Director of Hilltop Child Development Center for 18 years. Both retired in 1993. Their five children, Beth, Mitch, Durand, Kristin, and Gretchen along with their spouses and 11 grandchildren will host an Open House on Friday, Dec. 28, from 5-9 p.m. at the home of Durand and Martin Moore. No gifts please.

The bride graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Environmental Design. The groom graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of General Studies in Geography, and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. They plan to marry at 4 p.m. March 16, 2013 in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Rev. Lewis Tyra and Dr. Virginia Francis Johnston of Lawrence were married on December 27, 1952 at Christ Church, St. Paul, Mn. Lew, an ordained priest is the Rector Emeritus of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Kansas City where he served for 25 years and now retired enjoys wood sculpture carving. Ginny is a Professor Emeritus, Kansas Medical Center School of Allied Health where she served as Chair of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences and now retired enjoys playing bridge. They have three children; Debi Kay and husband Dan Ramlow of Topeka, Jeff Mark and wife Jackie Sue Johnston of Minneapolis and Lisa Mary and husband Bill Dorn of St. Louis, eight grandchildren; Paul and wife Courtney with Great Granddaughter Taryn Tyra Ramlow of Overland Park, David and Erik Ramlow of Topeka, Drew and Sara, and Joe and Luciana Johnston, Tiffany and Billy Clifton of Minneapolis, and Conrad and Larissa Dorn of St. Louis. All of the family will be together to celebrate the anniversary event during the Holidays.

Father Roger Schroder, a family friend of the Trepinski’s officiated. The bride is the daughter of Robert and Celeste Trepinski of Lawrence. The groom is the son of Michael and Ann Hibbert of Bristol, England. Matron of Honor was Sarah Luczak. Maid of Honor was Lauren Parsons. Bridesmaids were Kristen Miller, Malinda O’Hara, April Radic and Sarah Rathbun. Flower Girl was Madelyn Luczak. Best Man was Gregory Ball. Groomsmen were Matthew Hibbert, Craig Jarrett and Dante Veja. Ushers were the bride’s brothers, Christopher Trepinski and Tony Trepinski. Ring Bearer was Ethan O’Hara. The couple reside in Las Vegas, NV.
James and Clenece (Roberts) Hills were married on Christmas Day, 1962, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence. They will celebrate their fiftieth anniversary with a reception at Trinity Episcopal Church tomorrow (December 30) from 3-5. Friends and former students are invited. Jim Hills retired as a professor at Haskell Indian Nations University in 2001. He has been a school administrator and a specialist in foster care since receiving his doctorate at KU in 1972. Clenece Hills has been an English teacher in the Lawrence Public Schools, retiring in 2000. The Hills have three children. Shane A. Hills (Elizabeth) lives in Overland Park; Anne Hills Woods and Eve Hills Cummins (Jim) live in Lawrence. Four of their grandchildren live in Lawrence: Wyatt James Woods, James Cole Cummins, Bryson Cummins, and Payton Cummins. Three of their grandchildren live in Overland Park: Zachary Thomas Stoll Hills, Rachel Vance Hills, and Grace Elizabeth Hills.
