Paul and Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Hull, El Dorado, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today in Fellowship Hall at the Towanda United Methodist Church, 103 S. Fourth St., Towanda. The reception will be hosted by their children. Paul Gilbert Hull and Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Wheeler, both of Towanda, were married April 18, 1942, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith, Ark. Paul was in the U.S. Army stationed at Camp Chaffee and Bette was teaching music in Peabody at the time. Both were educators having served as teachers, counselor and administrator and retiring from Lawrence Public Schools after 20 years. Paul retired in 1982 as principal of West Junior High School. Bette taught at Pinckney and Sunset Hills Schools. They also were employed in the public schools of Kansas City, Kan., Leon, Towanda and Peabody. Since retiring, they have lived on a farm near El Dorado, which was original owned by Bette’s maternal grandparents, Addison D. and Minnie Belle Wagoner. They also traveled 48 of the lower 50 states and also in Canada and Mexico in their motor home. They have a son, the Rev. Dr. Paul G. Hull, Jr., Boston; a daughter, Susan Green, Topeka; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts.
Gary L. and Linda R. Elston, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. A vacation is planned with their children and grandchildren. Linda Neis and Gary Elston were married April 27, 1962, in Lawrence. Gary worked his entire career at the Kansas Public Service, now Black Hills Energy. Linda was a homemaker for several years, and later worked part-time at the Kansas Union and the Lawrence School District. Both are retired. They enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren, time on their farm and gardening. The couple have two daughters, Cheryl Nunn, Spring Hill, and Kimberly Elston, Lawrence; a son, Mark and wife Cheryll, Baldwin City; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Rick and Debby Smoots, McLouth, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in McLouth. Debby Stoll and Rick Smoots were married April 22, 1972, at Tonganoxie Christian Church. Rick has worked for the Leavenworth Jefferson Electric Company for over 40 years. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during the Vietnam War. He currently works for the electric company, owns Smoots Trucking, and does custom hay in the summer. Debby was a hair stylist and then began working for the McLouth School District, driving a school bus after her children started school. She has been employed there for over 30 years.
