The bride is the daughter of Don and Monica Durkin, Eudora. The groom is the son of Gale and Linda Hellwig, Chetopa. Maids of honor were Elizabeth Durkin and Audra Tope. Best men were Matt Hellwig and Nathan Blackledge. Bridesmaids were Mary Miller, Ellie Barta and Lindsay Halsey. Groomsmen were Neil Philpot, Justin Horton and Brice Scothorn. Flower girls were Lillian Hellwig, Brynn Hellwig and Samantha Handshy. Other attendants were Estelle Montgomery, Kyla Booth, Jill Blackledge, Ashley Kush, Cara Spriggs, Ashlee Matthews, Melissa McCoy and Traci Vapp. Ushers were Chris Durkin, Tim Durkin, Ben Miller and Chad Weeks. A reception was given at Parrot Bey in Pittsburg. The bride is a graduate of Eudora High School and Pittsburg State University. She is the director of publications and special events at PSU. The groom is a graduate of Chetopa High School and PSU. He is an assistant football coach at PSU. The couple reside in Pittsburg.
Poage and Norwood
Lindsey Poage, Baldwin City, and Brandon Norwood, Overbrook, were married April 30, 2011, at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, with the Rev. Tom Brady officiating. The bride is the daughter of LeRoy and Linda Poage, Baldwin City. The groom is the son of Gregg and Candace Norwood, Overbrook. Maid of honor was Amanda Poage. Best man was Sean Norwood. Bridesmaid was Katie Roth. Groomsman was Robbie Johnson. Flower girl was Addy Johnson. Ushers were Tayne Preno and Robert Lent. A reception was given at the Spring Hill Suites in Lawrence. The bride is a 2001 graduate of Baldwin High School. She earned an associate’s degree in business entrepreneurship from Johnson County Community College in 2009 and is employed by Readiness Rounds in customer service operation. The groom is a 2006 graduate of Santa Fe High School. He earned an automotive technology certificate from Washburn Technical School in 2006 and is employed by Northrop Grumman in central repair facility. The couple reside in Lawrence.
Randy and Edna Van Schmus, Lawrence, celebrated their 50th anniversary Thursday with a family dinner at the Ten restaurant in the Eldridge Hotel. Randy and Edna were married June 30, 1961, at Monterey Park United Methodist Church in Pasadena, Calif. They have two sons, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Nina, and Derek and daughter-in-law, Pam, all of Lawrence, and a daughter, Jennifer Chartier and son-in-law, Mike, Wauwatosa, Wis. They also have five grandchildren. The couple were also given a card shower from friends and family.
Huffman and Gryszowka
Steven and Patsy Huffman, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Kasey Huffman, to Matt Gryszowka, both of Roeland Park. The future bride is a 2002 graduate of Free State High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in human ecology, with an emphasis in apparel marketing, from Kansas State University in 2006. She is an account manager at Kforce Professional Staffing. The future groom is the son of Dave and Debra Gryszowka, Olathe. He is a 2001 graduate of Olathe East High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies, with an emphasis in sports science and sports management, from Kansas University in 2005. He is an account sales manager for Pepsico. The couple plan an Oct. 8, 2011, wedding at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence.
Ryan and Betzen
Nellie Ryan, Lawrence, and Alex Betzen, Olathe, were married May 28, 2011, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Shawnee, with the Rev. Jim Ludwikoski officiating. The bride is the daughter of Joe Ryan, Lawrence, and Angie Reiling, McLouth. The groom is the son of Fred and Michelle Betzen, Olathe. Maids of honor were Heather Lowe and Jennifer Daniels. Best man was Matt Gapske. Bridesmaids were Felicia Goodison, Nancy DeBauche, Rachel Levin and Olivia Betzen. Groomsmen were Jake Foiles, Brian Sims, Jake Valentine, Dan Brauch and James Ryan. A reception was given at The Mission Theatre. The bride is a 2004 graduate of Free State High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008 and a master’s degree in business administration in 2010, both from Kansas State University. She is employed by ConocoPhillips. The groom is a 2004 graduate of Shawnee Mission West High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2007 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree this May, both from K-State. He is employed by VCA Emergency Animal Hospital & Referral Center. The couple reside in San Diego.
Stanley and Alice Jo DeFries, Lawrence, received a weeklong trip for their 60th wedding anniversary, hosted by their children, to Indianapolis, Brown County and Nashville (Ind.) and Bloomington. The couple were married June 10, 1951, at First Baptist Church in Wellsville. Stanley earned master’s and doctorate degrees from the School of Music at Indiana University. The DeFrieses were faculty members of Ottawa University for 30 years before moving to Brandon Woods. Stanley was the chairman of the music department and Alice Jo taught English as a second language to international students. They have a son, S. Lucky and daughter-in-law, Pam, Topeka, and a daughter, Paula Nauman and son-in-law, Bob, Louisburg.
Hughes and Kidwell
Van and Brenda Hughes, Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda D. Hughes, to JD Kidwell Jr., both of Martinsburg, W.Va. The future bride is a 2008 graduate of Millbrook High School in Winchester, Va. She is employed by Hagerstown Ford in Hagerstown, Md. The future groom is the son of Jim and Jennifer Kidwell, Romney, W. Va. He is a 2001 graduate of Hampshire High School in Romney and a June 2011 graduate of James Rumsey CTC. The couple plan an August 2012 wedding in Key West, Fla.
