Danny and Tani Ruff, Ozawkie, and Debbie Hart, Eudora, along with Dave Smith and Rhonda Smith, both of Ottawa, announce the engagement of their children, Ashli Ruff, Eudora, and Justin Smith, Ottawa. The future bride is a 2006 graduate of Eudora High School. She is attending Emporia State University and will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and an associate’s degree in Spanish next May. The future groom is a 2005 graduate of Ottawa High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from ESU in 2009, and is an assistant manager at Walmart in McPherson. John and Carolyn Reed, Lawrence, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday at Maceli’s with family and friends. Don Kile of Emporia and Steve Kile of Topeka, longtime friends of the couple, furnished music for the event. The couple were married June 5, 1960, in Larned. John graduated from Kansas University School of Pharmacy. Carolyn graduated from Washburn University. They owned a drug store in Cottonwood Falls. John is currently a pharmacist for Dillons. They have two daughters, Cindy Reed, Lawrence, and Lisa Miller and husband Rick, Overland Park; a son, Paul and wife Pat, Lawrence; and five granddaughters, Ashton and Emily Miller, and Molly, Jessica and Allison Reed. The couple request no gifts.

Van Dyke

William and Beverly Van Dyke, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner, given by their children, on Sunday. Bill Van Dyke and Beverly Bahnmaier were married June 4, 1950, at the United Methodist Church in Lecompton. Bill is originally from Battle Creek, Mich. He graduated from Ottawa University, worked at Kansas Color Press for 30 years and then worked as a pressman for the Kansas University School of Education for six years. Beverly is a graduate of Lecompton High School and Ottawa University. She taught at New York, Woodlawn and East Heights schools in Lawrence for 30 years. They have two daughters, Jan Workman and husband Mark, and Barbara Van Dyke, all of Lawrence; a son, Nelson; and four grandchildren. A son, David, died in 2005, and a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Van Dyke, died in February. The couple request no gifts.

Laughlin

Clinton and Billie Laughlin, Lawrence, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 8. Clinton Laughlin and Billie Hahn were married April 8, 1950, in Lawrence. Both were raised in Lawrence. Clinton retired after 40 years from FMC, now ICL, in 1991. Billie worked at Sears and then became a nurse in 1988. She retired in 1994. They have a daughter, Connie Bishop, Brandon, Fla.; a son, Sonny Laughlin and wife Roxanne, Lecompton; four granddaughters, Kim Johnson, Kristie Vitale, Paula Hawk and Michelle Spiess; four great-grandchildren, Chance and Chastity Johnson, and Abigayle and Ethan Spiess; and a great-great-grandson, Kesan Sanders. Congratulatory wishes were sent to the couple from family and friends.

Joyce and Stan Mullenix, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with their family. Stan Mullenix and Joyce Edmonds were married July 21, 1950, at Danforth Chapel in St. Louis. Stan is a graduate of Kansas University. He served in the military during World War II. He retired in 1987 after teaching at West Junior High School for 24 years and at Eureka High School for four years. Joyce graduated from Stormont-Vail School of Nursing in 1951. She worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 11 years, and as a school nurse for USD 497 for 22 years, retiring in 1989. The couple have four daughters, Chris Johnson and husband Kenny of Lawrence, Cindy Gilmore and husband Jack of Phoenix, Sue Kanoho and husband, Farrell of Fairfield, Calif., and Julie Halling and husband Andy of Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dennis and Delores “Dolly” Sooby, Lawrence, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June with a limo ride to dinner at Lidia’s in Kansas City, Mo. Also attending were their children, daughters-in-law, and Dolly’s brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Marcie Gough, McHenry, Ill., who were celebrating their 53rd anniversary with two of their children, Pam and Dan Gough. The couple were married March 25, 1950, in Elgin, Ill. Dennis attended Larned High School. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1946 and served in the Army of Occupation in Japan. He graduated from Elgin Watch College in 1950 and was a watchmaker for Sooby Jewelry in Larned from 1950 to 1954. He also was a pilot and flight instructor for Erhart Flying Service in Lawrence from 1954 to 1972, chief pilot for Viking Investment in Lawrence from 1972 to 1975 and pilot for Kansas University from 1975 to 1992. Dolly graduated Elgin High School in 1948. She worked at Elgin Watch Factory from 1948 to 1950 and at E&E Specialties in Lawrence from 1978 to 1990. They have three sons, Steven D. and wife Marlene Rupp, Malden, Mass., Thomas B., Las Vegas, and Larry D. and wife Ruth Ann Sooby, Woodbridge, Va.; and a daughter, Rita L. Sooby, Lawrence. Autumn Jones and Brian Bishop, both of Lawrence, were married April 24, 2010, at Danforth Chapel at Kansas University with the Rev. James Calderon officiating. The bride is the daughter of Paxton and Janie Jones, Topeka. The groom is the son of Dennis and Kathy Bishop, Olathe. Maid of honor was Alexis Jones. Best man was Sean Patrick. Bridesmaids were Jennifer Wingert and Rachel Baumbach. Groomsmen were Chris Bishop and Jim Boothe. Ushers were Seth Roberts and Nate Clark. Guestbook attendant was Molly Maguire. A reception was given at Liberty Hall. The bride is a 2003 graduate of KU and is employed by the Douglas County District Court. The groom attended KU and is employed by Free State Brewing Co. The couple reside in Lawrence.

Elizabeth Rogers and Dr. Benjamin Rebein, both formerly of Lawrence, were married May 29, 2010, in an outdoor wedding in Dodge City with Justice Lawton R. Nuss officiating. The bride is the daughter of Don and Betty Rogers, Bucklin. The groom is the son of David and Bernice Rebein, Dodge City. Bridesmaids were Saraliene Durrett, Sarah Warner and Verna Clubb. Groomsmen were Kyle Schaffer, Dr. Scott Richins and Marcus Rogers. Ushers were John Rogers and Joshua Rogers. Flower girls were Chloe Rogers, Amity Rogers and Serenity Clubb. The bride is a graduate of Bucklin High School and Dodge City Community College. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Washburn University and a Juris Doctor from the Kansas University School of Law in 2007. After graduating from law school, she worked as a judicial clerk to Kansas Supreme Court Justice Lawton R. Nuss, then as an associate attorney at Manson & Karbank, Overland Park. The groom is a graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School and DCCC. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Washburn University, and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 2010. He also earned a master of business administration degree in health care leadership from Rockhurst University’s Helzberg School of Management and will complete postdoctoral training in general surgery at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. The couple reside in Hackensack, N.J.

Raquan Marie Sieber and Royal Bowen Hoffer, both of Lawrence, announce their engagement. The future bride is the daughter of Bob and Maggie Sieber, Eudora. She is a graduate of Lawrence High School and attended Allen County Community College. The future groom is the son of Russell and Mary Jane Hoffer, Lecompton. He is a graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School. The couple plan an Oct. 23, 2010, wedding at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Lawrence.

Harwood and Wessels

John and Ginny Wessels announce the engagement of their daughter, Jenica Lynn Wessels, to Samuel Landman Harwood, all of Lawrence. The future bride is a 2007 graduate of Lawrence High School. She will earn a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, with a minor in chemistry from Baylor University in December. The future groom is the son of Bob Harwood and Susie Harwood, both of Lawrence. He is also a 2007 graduate of LHS, and will earn a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Baylor University next May. The couple plan a Jan. 1, 2011, wedding at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.

Anniversary

De Mott

John and Vera De Mott, Lawrence, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this weekend with family at The Barn Bed and Breakfast Inn near Valley Falls. The couple were married July 28, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan. John is a graduate of Kansas University and Vera of Emporia State University. For many years, John served as a member of the Kansas City Star news staff and Vera as a secretary for General Motors Corp. In 1962, John left the Star to teach journalism at KU and they moved to Lawrence. They lived in Lawrence until 1969, when John joined the faculty at Northwestern University, beginning a career in teaching journalism that also included service at Northern Illinois University, Temple University, the University of Memphis and the American University in Cairo, Egypt. While they lived in Philadelphia, Vera taught in Temple University’s court reporting program. At AUC, she taught U.S. office practices and served as a consultant to its business education faculty. Upon retiring in 1993, Vera and John returned to Kansas City, Mo. For several years they lived on the Plaza and traveled extensively. The couple has traveled in more than 40 countries, in addition to each of the United States and all of the provinces of Canada.

The bride is the daughter of Houston and Carol Keen, Baldwin City. The groom is the son of James and Elaine Ehrhardt, Baldwin, Md. Maid of honor was Julie Drendel. Best man was Kenny Ehrhardt. Bridesmaids were Stephanie Aves, Katie Olson and Caitlin Patrick. Groomsmen were Brian Ehrhardt, Michael Heath and Doug Anderson. Flower girl was Bailey Leming. Usher was Alan Lynch. Candlelighters were Tara Dozier and Sarah Crawford. Guestbook and program attendants were Charity Nelson, Erika Brown and Megan Ward. Bride’s assistant was Jamie Martin. A reception was given at the bride’s family farm, Rockledge Farms, south of Lawrence. The bride is a 2004 graduate of Ottawa High School, attended Oklahoma State University and is a 2010 graduate of Johnson County Community College School of Nail Technology. She is the office coordinator for Ehrhardt Farms of Baldwin, Md., and a nail technician at Madonna Tan & Cuts of Madonna, Md. The groom is a 1997 graduate of Fallston High School and attended Harford County Community College. He is in charge of the embryo import and export operation and show cattle for Ehrhardt Farms. The couple reside in Baldwin, Md.
