A reception is planned from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Fellowship Hall at Baldwin City First United Methodist Church to celebrate the 40th anniversaries of Martin and Barbara Pressgrove and Roger and Jan Boyd. The reception is being hosted by both couples’ children, David Pressgrove and wife Jennifer, Michelle Pressgrove, and Jon Boyd and wife Mary. The couples were married in a double-ring ceremony on Aug. 8, 1970, at the First United Methodist Church. Barbara and Roger are siblings. Martin Pressgrove recently retired as a paraprofessional at Baldwin High School. Barbara Pressgrove retired as school librarian at Perry-Lecompton High School. Roger Boyd is a professor emeritus at Baker University and director of the Baker Natural Areas. Jan Boyd retired as a librarian at Baker. The couples request no gifts.

Bertha and John Nelson, lifetime residents of Lawrence, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner in July. The couple were married Aug. 7, 1950, by the Rev. A.L. Parker. John is a U.S. Army veteran and served in the 2nd Division as a military police officer during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. He is now retired after more than 40 years of service as an automobile mechanic. John is a member of the First Regular Missionary Baptist Church in Lawrence and serves on the Deacon Board. He enjoys gospel music and singing with the Male Chorus at First Regular. Bertha is a retired homemaker and has spent the majority of her life caring for her family and grandchildren. She’s also a member of the First Regular Missionary Baptist Church, where she’s a member of the Missionary Auxiliary, Sewing Circle and the Deaconess Board. They have five children, Mark Nelson, Cindy Nelson and Timothy Nelson, all of Lawrence, Diana Brown, Baton Rouge, La., and Teresa Denson, Memphis, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The bride is the daughter of Lucian and Ecaterina Birladeanu, Alba Iulia. The groom is the son of Rodney and Roberta Hofer, Lawrence. Nikolai Yotov and Roxana Chesoi served as the nasi, an Orthodox tradition where a married couple perform the duties of a best man and maid of honor and also have responsibilities after the wedding. A reception followed the ceremony at Hotel Cetate in Alba Iulia. A second reception will be held Sept. 11 at the Castle Tea Room in Lawrence. Woodyard

George and Eleanor Woodyard, Lawrence, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 31 with the dedication of a garden at the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum and an afternoon reception for family and friends at the Adams Alumni Center at Kansas University. The Woodyards moved to Lawrence in 1966 after George finished his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. At KU, he was a professor of Spanish and held several administrative positions, including dean of international studies, until his retirement in 2005. Eleanor was a high school teacher and has been involved with antique groups, garden clubs and the League of Women Voters, in addition to being a homemaker. They have both been active in Immanuel Lutheran Church. They have two sons, Lance and wife Dr. Erika, Collbran, Colo., and Devon, Cedar Crest, N.M.; two daughters, Shana Stuart and husband Dr. Scott, Iowa City, Iowa, and Kenda Arendt and husband Al, Kansas City, Kan.; and eight grandchildren.

Max and Doris Moore, Baldwin City, celebrated their 70th anniversary on Aug. 7. Max Moore and Doris Winters were married in 1940, in Lawrence. The Moores are lifelong residents of Douglas County where they continue to run the family farm. Over the years, they have enjoyed playing country music, raising livestock, gardening and spending time with family and friends. They have a daughter, Donna Slusser and husband Louis; a son, Danny and wife Rhonda, all of Baldwin City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Pringle Sr. were married Aug. 14, 1955, in Yuma, Ariz. Bob graduated from Lawrence High School and served in the U.S. Marines for four years. He retired from General Motors, and owns Siebar Service Heating and Cooling with his son, Rob. Gloria graduated from Satanta High School. She attended Kansas University, majoring in art, and is an administrative assistant at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. They have a daughter, Jan Hornberger and husband Chip; a son, Rob and wife Jeri, all of Baldwin City; and two grandchildren, Kayla Pringle and Clint Hornberger. The couple request no gifts.

David and Twilla Brown, Baldwin City, along with Robert and Jo Ann Thompson, Louisburg, announce the engagement of their children, Megan Elizabeth Brown, Eudora, and Ryan Steven Thompson, Louisburg. The future bride is a 1998 graduate of Lawrence High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University in 2002. She is a payroll specialist for Garmin International. The future groom attended Louisburg High School until 1999 and continued his education at Paola Adult Education Center, graduating in 2004. He is a 911 dispatcher and reserve deputy for the Miami County Sheriff’s Department. The couple plan an Oct. 2, 2010, wedding at Worden United Methodist Church in Baldwin City.

D. Leon and Ardith L. Curtis celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a dinner with friends on Aug. 11. The couple were married Aug. 11, 1950, in Independence, Mo. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Leon worked for AT&T in Kansas City, Mo., until going into full-time ministry as a missionary for the Community of Christ (Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints). After ministerial retirement as an evangelist in 1991, he worked for Dillons, both Hy-Vee stores and Lawrence Bus Co. In November 2009, he retired from the Hy-Vee on Sixth Street. While living in Jefferson County, Leon raised and trained registered quarterhorses. In 2005, they sold the horses and acreage and moved to Lawrence, where they now reside. Ardith worked as an accountant for many years, then completed licensed practical nurse training while they were on assignment in Tennessee. She worked in nursing homes and hospitals until retiring from Lawrence Memorial Hospital in 2006. They have two daughters, Rebecca C. Giles and husband Kevin, Stillwater, Minn., and Lianna D. Corteville and husband Timothy J., Chesterfield, Mo.; three sons, Phillip L., Jeffrey B., and Randall C., all of Lawrence; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

They have a daughter, Julie Katzfey, Eudora; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The couple request no gifts.

Harold and Anna Marie Hickock, Lecompton, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June with family in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Harold H. Hickock and Anna Marie Icks were married Sept. 4, 1960, in Lawrence. Harold retired from Bud Jennings Carpet One after 42 years then started his own business, Triple H Binding. Anna Marie was a homemaker and had a day care. The couple have a son, Harlan and wife Lynne, Largo, Fla., a daughter, Barbara Wolf and husband Rex, Topeka; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

John and Carolyn Wise, Linwood, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 5 at their son Scott’s home, 22332 Golden Road, Linwood. John E. Wise and Carolyn Christensen were married Sept. 3, 1950, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Denver. John graduated from Bethany College. He taught school at Roxbury and Washington high schools and continues to farm near Linwood. Carolyn attended Bethany College and graduated from Kansas University. She taught school in Tonganoxie before retiring. They have two sons, Bruce, Lawrence, and Scott, Linwood; a daughter, Karen Aeschliman, Sabetha; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The couple request no gifts.
