Russell and Patricia Pilshaw, Lenexa, announce the engagement of their daughter, Heather Pilshaw, to Anthony Ruggles, both of Lawrence. The future bride is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with a minor in behavior analysis, from Kansas University in 2005, and is studying for a graphic design degree. She is an office manager at The Pexco Company, LLC. The future groom is the son of Kendal and Gloria Ruggles, Chanute. He is a 2002 graduate of Chanute High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force at Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota from May 2004 to May 2008, and as a reservist for the U.S. Air Force at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita since May 2008. He is a field service technician at Heubel Material Handling. The couple plan a July 3, 2010, wedding at Shawnee Mission Park.

Dr. Gregory and Linda Schnose, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Elise Anne Schnose, to Dr. Travis Owen Abicht, both of Westwood. The future bride is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence High School and earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. She will receive her medical degree from Kansas University Medical Center in May, and start an obstetrics and gynecology residency at University of Illinois, Chicago, in June. The future groom is the son of Paul and Mary Abicht, La Crosse, Wis. He is a 1997 graduate of Logan High School in La Crosse. He earned a chemistry degree from KU in 2001 and a medical degree from KUMC in 2005. He will finish a general surgery residency at KUMC in June and start a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago in July. The couple plan a Sept. 18, 2010, wedding at St. John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence.

Susan Kary, Ozawkie, and Gregory Scholtz, Lawrence, announce their engagement. The future bride is the daughter of Ronald Bruggeman, Ozawkie, and Gayle Johnson, Tempe, Ariz. She is a 2002 graduate of Jefferson West High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in human biology from Kansas University, a master’s degree in nutrition from KU Medical Center, and is pursuing a doctorate in medical nutrition science at the medical center, where she works as a graduate research assistant. The future groom is the son of Simon and Pamela Scholtz, Lawrence. He is a 2003 graduate of Lawrence High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from KU, and plans to earn a master’s degree in molecular biotechnology from KUMC next May. He is molecular laboratory scientist for a clinical laboratory in Overland Park. The couple plan a May 23, 2010, wedding at Danforth Chapel at KU.

Paul and Sheila Bloom announce the engagement of their daughter, Myriam Bloom, all of Lawrence, to Matthew Howell, Lexington, Ky. The future bride is a 2005 graduate of Free State High School. She will earn a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts and illustration from Missouri State University, in Springfield, in May. The future groom is the son of James and Vivian Howell, Liberty, Mo. He is a 2002 graduate of Blue Springs South High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Missouri State, and is studying for a doctorate in public administration at the University of Kentucky. The couple plan an Aug. 7, 2010, wedding in Parkville, Mo.

Paul Barnds and Dr. Shawn Sabin, Prairie Village, and Kathryn and Dean Lawrenz, Mountain City, Tenn., announce the engagement of their daughter, Meghan Barnds, to Chris Stoppel, both of Lawrence. The future bride is a 2001 graduate of Olathe East High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and communications studies at Texas Christian University, and a juris doctorate from the University of Colorado in 2008. She is an assistant attorney general for the state of Kansas. The future groom is the son of Dr. Larry and Nancy Stoppel, Washington. He is a 1997 graduate of Washington High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration, and a master’s degree in accounting and information systems, both from Kansas University, and a master’s degree in higher education from Iowa State University in 2005. He is the associate director for New Student Orientation at KU. The couple plan an Aug. 28, 2010, wedding in Lawrence.

Anniversary

Fuston

Donald and Margaret Fuston, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 10 at Lecompton United Methodist Church. Donald Fuston and Margaret Bacon were married April 9, 1950, in Bronson. The couple met at Moran Rural High School and have lived in the Lawrence area for nearly 46 years. They have two sons, David Fuston and wife Michele Simmons, Liberty, Mo., and Andrew Fuston, New York City; a daughter, Annette Fuston, Wichita; and five grandchildren. A third son, Paul Fuston, died in 2008, and is survived by his widow, Debbie Fuston, Topeka. The couple requests no gifts.

Leon and Cristy Bidinger, Perry, along with Raymond and Bobi Morris, Scranton, announce the engagement of their children, Kallie Bidinger and Ricky Morris, both of Lawrence. The future bride is a graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School and Community College of Cosmetology. She is enrolled at the University of Phoenix completing a business degree, and is self-employed at the Hairport, Lawrence. The future groom is a graduate of Santa Fe Trail High School. He has been a journeyman carpenter for Union Local No. 1445 since 2000, and is a foreman for Wolf Construction Inc. in Topeka. The couple plan a private June 12, 2010, wedding in Lawrence.

Whitenight

Pete and Joanie Whitenight, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a family reunion with their children and their spouses and grandchildren in mid-July. Pete Whitenight and Joan Underwood were married April 16, 1960, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. Pete earned a bachelor’s degree in business in 1959, and a juris doctor in 1969, both from Kansas University. He was a former menswear retailer. He later worked in the financial services business for 20 years and is now retired. Joanie earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1958, and a bachelor’s degree in education in 1959, both from KU. She is a homemaker and a landscape artist. The couple have three sons, David, Centennial, Colo., Tom, Menlo Park, Calif., and Ted, Denver; two daughters, Nancy Wilkins, Littleton, Colo., and Katherine Senecal, Lawrence; and eight grandchildren.

Kasson

Earle and Karen Kasson, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception in July. Earle Lamar Kasson and Karen Kay Fish were married April 3, 1960, in Lecompton. Earle graduated from Lecompton High School in 1956. He attended Kansas State University and Emporia State Teachers College. He worked for the Brune Brothers, Selichnow Tree Service, and for Farmland Industries from 1968 until he retired in 1999. Karen graduated from Lecompton High in 1959. She also attended Emporia State Teachers College. She was a homemaker, and worked part-time at Rusty’s IGA and sold Avon. The couple have four daughters, Debra Kasson-Jones, Kennesaw, Ga.; Tamara Dye, Alpharetta, Ga.; and Lori Jeter and Dianna Kasson, both of Lawrence; two sons, Stephen and Gerald, both of Lawrence; 14 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A grandson died in 2004. The couple requests no gifts.

Crispian Lynn Paul and Matthew James Jenkins, both of Wichita, announce their engagement. The future bride is the daughter of Jeffry Paul, Wichita, and the late Robin Paul. She attended Mason City (Iowa) High School and graduated with an international baccalaureate diploma from Wichita High School East in 1997. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social work in 2001, and a master’s degree in social work in 2003, both from Kansas University. She formerly worked at Spectrum Optical in downtown Lawrence. The future groom is the son of Gregg Jenkins and Cherie Jenkins, both of Wichita. He is also a 1997 graduate of Wichita High School East. The couple plan a Sept. 4, 2010, wedding in Derby.

Howard

John and Nancy Sue Howard, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 24 with invited family and friends at First Southern Baptist Church in Lawrence. The couple were married April 24, 1960, at Assembly of God Church in Lawrence. Nancy is retired from Honeywell in Olathe. She currently does volunteer work in her spare time. John is retired from Kansas University Printing Service. He is currently a bi-vocational pastor for the Grace Communion International, and is continuing his education. They have a daughter, Sandra Lloyd, Topeka; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A son, John, died on April 4, 2008.

Scot and Jane Buxton, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their son, Brett Buxton, to Dayna Alvey, both of Monterey, Calif. The future groom is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in American studies and history with a minor in communications from Kansas University. He is the hotel manager of Casa Palmero at Pebble Beach Resorts. The future bride is the daughter of Robert Alvey, San Ramon, Calif., and Caron Oclassen, Sun Valley, Idaho. She is a 2001 graduate of California High School in San Ramon. She earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation, parks and tourism administration with a minor in elementary education from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
