McDow

Donald G. and Roberta J. McDow, Lawrence, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September with an Alaskan cruise and visit to Denali National Park. The couple were married on Sept. 9, 1949, at Westport Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Mo. They and their three children came to Lawrence in 1958 and opened the Ben Franklin store. Don later had the Don McDow Insurance Agency Inc., which he operated for 30 years. He retired in 1995, while Roberta became active in real estate. Their children are Richard “Rick,” Suzanne and David Nutt, all of Lawrence, and Deborah and Mark Miller, Kansas City, Mo.

Kelly and Michael Chase, Lawrence, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows at 4 p.m. today at Lawrence Free Methodist Church. The couple were married Oct. 13, 1984, in Raytown, Mo. Kelly is a legal administrative specialist with the Social Security Administration. Mike is a pre-press operator with Printing Solutions Inc. They have two sons, Dennis Miller and wife Angie, Eudora, and Cameron, Lawrence; two daughters, Ashley and Whitney, both of Lawrence; and six grandchildren, Josiah, Haley, Malia, Isaiah, Carson and Alyssa. The Rev. Rex and Shirley Rictor, Edna, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 10 at the First Assembly of God, 126 E. Locust, Independence. Rex Rictor and Shirley McIntire, were married on Oct. 10, 1959, in Scott City. Rex attended Scott City High School and Central Bible College. He is the senior pastor at the First Assembly of God in Independence. Shirley attended Scott City High School, is a homemaker and works beside her husband in the ministry. They have three daughters, Twila Lampke and Rexanna Schneider and husband James, all of Eudora, and Evonna James and husband the Rev. Ron, Pomona; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. McHenry Charles and Vera McHenry, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Lawrence. Charles McHenry and Vera Caylor were married Nov. 5, 1949, in Kansas City, Kan. Charles retired from Western Union in Kansas City, Mo., after 31 years of service. Vera worked part time for K.C. Orthopedic Clinic in Kansas City, Mo., and retired in 1990. After they were married, they moved to Roeland Park, and later to Cabot, Ark., and to Lawrence in 2005. They have two sons, Chris, Lawrence, and Glenn, Woodstock, Ga.; a daughter, Pamela Williams, Arkansas; five grandsons, Jacob, Christopher, Tyler, Kyle and Dylan McHenry; and five great-grandchildren.

Longaker Harold and Jeanne Longaker, Lawrence, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Wednesday. The couple were married Oct. 7, 1954, in Warrensburg, Mo. Harold retired from the Topeka Police Department in 1976. Jeanne retired from the Kansas University Public Safety Office in 1992. She now works for Meals on Wheels. They have four daughters, Vicki Lister and Debbie Dabney, both of Topeka, Valita Evans, New London, Mo., and Mary Bakken, Lawrence; a son, Mark Thurman, Meriden; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Benny T. and Pat J. Rosell, Baldwin City, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an autumn vacation in Arkansas. The couple were married Oct. 24, 1959, at the Nazarene Church in Cherokee, Okla. Benny and Pat lived most of their married life in Hoxie. Benny was a high school teacher for 30 years and served as pastor of the Hoxie Christian Church for more than 24 years. He currently serves as the pastor of the Lone Star Church of the Brethren south of Lawrence, and enjoys bass fishing and substitute teaching. Pat was a homemaker. She then worked as a preschool teacher in Hoxie and later in home-health care in Salina, after the couple moved there in 2000. She enjoys oil and watercolor painting and has displayed her artwork in various shows in Kansas. The couple moved to Baldwin City in 2003 to be closer to their family, a son, Michael Rosell and wife Katy, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; a daughter, Yolanda Hargett and husband Cole, Olathe; and five grandchildren.

The groom is a 1995 graduate of Clay Center High School. He earned an associate degree at Butler Community College and is employed with BRB Contractors. The couple reside in Lawrence.

Brooks

Albert Lee and Rita LaFay Brooks, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary later this year with a vacation with family and friends in Virginia. The couple were married Nov. 6, 1949, at Danforth Chapel at Kansas University. Lee and LaFay returned to Lawrence in 1967. Lee retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1968, after serving 25 years as a pilot. Upon retirement, Lee earned a master’s degree in education from Kansas University, then taught and worked for the KU Athletic Department. The couple traveled with their children, Steve, Connie and Tom, who attended Lawrence schools, KU and Baker University, and lived in several countries and many U.S. states. They enjoy church activities, golf, gardening, reading, quilting, sewing, carving and being with their family and friends. They have eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lloyd and Margaret Smelser, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 8 with a carry-in dinner following the 10 a.m. worship service and an informal reception from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Springdale Friends Church, east of McLouth. Their family and the church family will be hosts for the event. The couple were married Nov. 5, 1949, in the Stanwood Friends Church by the Rev. Belle Bond. They began Smelser Construction in 1962, doing soil conservation and general earth moving. The business continues with their son, David, his wife, Jean, and grandson Lee. The couple are members of the Springdale church and the Land Improvement Contractors of America, of which Lloyd has served several terms as a director. They have two daughters, Jeannie Jantz and husband Jerry, McLouth, and Margaret Sanford and husband Jarrod, Ottawa; four sons, Allen and wife Nancy, David and wife Jean, and Russell, all of McLouth, and Fred and wife Catherine, Oskaloosa; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts, but suggest a donation to the Good Shepherd Thrift Store in Tonganoxie.
