Yao and Younger
Jerome and Susan Younger announce the engagement of their son, Jerome “Garrett” Younger, all of Lawrence, to Tu Yao, HeYuan, China. The future bride is the daughter of Tu Qingping and Che Meiyan, both of HeYuan, China. She is earning a master’s degree in instructional technology design at Emporia State University. Elmer “Mo” and Charlotte “Charlie” Epperson, Bella Vista, Ark., will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 6 at 2265 N. 1137th Road in Eudora. The couple were married May 19, 1959, at the Terra Heights Baptist Church in Topeka. They lived in Topeka, before moving to Alma and later settled in Lawrence for 30 years. They retired to Bella Vista, Ark., in 2002. They have four sons, Alan, Topeka, Eric and wife Marge, Eudora, and Aron and Paul, both of Bella Vista, Ark.; and two grandchildren. A daughter Stacy Epperson preceded them in death.

Larry and Ethel Parker, Beloit, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends with a reception from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 7 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 307 E. Fifth St., Concordia. The couple were married June 6, 1959 in Osage City. Larry graduated from Burlingame High School in 1953. From 1958 to 1988, he was a technician at AT&T. From 1990 to 1997, he was technician at Kansas University’s telecommunications department. Ethel graduated from Osage City High School in 1959. She was a homemaker, a food service worker for the Ottawa Catholic School, a baker for KU, and a food service worker and cook manager for the Lawrence public schools. The couple moved to Beloit in 1997, where they were co-owners of the Banner Restaurant until retirement in 2004. They have two daughters, Penny Schwagerl, Palmyra, Va., and Pam Westbrook, Papillion, Neb.; two sons, Kimball, Lawrence, and Tim, Concordia; and nine grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts.
Harry and Virginia Kreider, Lawrence, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary today with family. They couple were married May 30, 1939, at the First Christian Church, in Horton. They lived in Effingham for 18 years before moving to Lawrence in 1964. Harry worked for Kansas University for 19 years before retiring in 1983. He also served in World War II in the European theater. Virginia was a cosmetologist. She managed the beauty shop at Presbyterian Manor for eight years and worked at Hallmark Cards Inc., both in Lawrence, for 10 1/2 years. She is retired. They have two daughters, Donna Smith, Kansas City, Mo., and Harriet Hamon and husband Gary, Lawrence; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Fister and Kilmer

Ronald and Nancy Reed, Oskaloosa, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house for friends and family from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 7 at their home, 6428 Ness Road, Oskaloosa. The couple were married June 7, 1959, at the United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. Ron worked for Hallmark Cards Inc. in Lawrence, and also farmed. Nancy had an accounting business. They have a daughter Ronda Schuler and husband Greg, Oskaloosa; and two sons, Charles and wife Ann, Lawrence, and the late Kevin Reed; and three grandchildren.
Fredrick and Barbara Grammer, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 6 with family. Fredrick Grammer and Barbara Hiddleston were married June 6, 1959, in Miami, Okla. Fred retired from the Lawrence Paper Company in March 2000, after 41 years of service. He also worked at Reuter Organ Company from August 2001 to April 2005. Barbara has worked as a teacher’s aide at Woodlawn School, a data clerk at Kansas University and retired in 2000, after running a daycare in her home. Paul and Jewell Willhite, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at 4 p.m. Sunday at Centenary United Methodist Church. The couple were married May 31, 1959, at West Des Moines Methodist Church, in West Des Moines, Iowa. Paul earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State College, in Ames, and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1962. Jewell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics with a major in applied art from Iowa State College, in Ames. They have lived in Lawrence since 1962, when Paul became a faculty member of Kansas University’s chemical and petroleum engineering department, where he is a professor. They have five children, Elizabeth Wilhelm, Longmont, Colo.; Mark, Grandview, Mo.; Ben, Battlefield, Mo.; and Sara Stilley and Rachel Lechtenberg, both of Lawrence; and 14 grandchildren.
Jolene Frances Munger and Drew Michael Loftin, both of Lawrence, were married April 18, 2009, at Danforth Chapel at Kansas University, with the Rev. Colleen Riley officiating. The bride is the daughter of John and Judy Munger, Croghan, N.Y. The groom is the son of Robert and Linda Loftin, Weskan. Maid of honor was Jodie Munger. Best man was Joe Sanderson. The future groom is a 2002 graduate of Weskan High School and earned a communication technology degree from Northwest Kansas Technical College in 2004. He is a canopy Internet specialist at Sunflower Broadband, Lawrence.
Tracy Miller, Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Don Thellman, Overland Park, were married May 2, 2009, at Danforth Chapel at Kansas University, with the Rev. Nancy Thellman, the groom’s sister-in-law, officiating. The bride’s daughter and groom’s son were honor attendants. A family dinner was given at Alvamar Country Club. The couple will reside in Overland Park.
Robert and Jean Givens, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 7 with family. Robert Givens and Jean Mason were married June 7, 1959, at Partridge Community Church in Partridge. Robert graduated from Hutchinson High School. He worked for Dillons in Hutchinson, Lyons, Shawnee and Lawrence for 44 years before he retired in 1999. He now works at Hy-Vee in Lawrence. Jean graduated from Partridge High School. She worked for Borton, Inc., in Hutchinson, and was also a homemaker. She later worked for Capitol Federal, in Lawrence, and also retired in 1999. The couple have lived in Partridge, Hutchinson, Lyons and Lawrence. They have three daughters, Rhonda Felix, Olathe; Julie Pruitt, De Soto; and Amy Riley, Lawrence; two sons, Wayne and Kyle, both of Lawrence; and 11 grandchildren.
Gary and Kay Hale, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday with an open house for family and friends at their home. Assisting with arrangements will be their sons, David, Lawrence, and Greg, Valley Glen, Calif., and special friend, Michelle Meyer, Lawrence. Gary and Kay were married May 31, 1959, in Clifton, and have resided in Lawrence since 1981. Gary is a retired bank officer and financial representative. Kay is a former executive with the Kansas Hospital Association. Both are retired.
Fred and Mary McCreary, Baldwin City, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with a reception hosted by their children from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Three Sisters Inn, Baldwin City. The couple were married May 23, 1969, at the First Presbyterian Church in Salina. They later moved Colby and then to Baldwin City in 1983. Fred had a career in journalism and with the Kansas Army National Guard. Mary taught for many years at Bethel Christian Academy and gave piano lessons. They have a son, Bryce and wife Julie, Lawrence; and two daughters, Sarah McCune and husband Matt, Baldwin City, and Ruthanne McCreary, Overland Park.

Jim is retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Topeka. Emma Jean is a retired dental assistant for Dr. Bruce Cole in Overbrook. They have three daughters, Jeanette Ables and husband Sonny, Joyce Scheck, Jackie Paige and husband Steve; and three grandchildren.

Janet retired from Perry-Lecompton School District after 18 years as lunch room secretary and bus driver.
