The bride is a graduate of Parkway North High School, St. Louis, and Kansas University. She is employed by Conestoga Rovers & Associates, Topeka. Palos and Shiney
Georgia Lucky Palos, Lawrence, and Justin Henry Shiney, Wichita, were married June 5, 2009, in their backyard in North Lawrence, with Merrill Evans officiating. The bride is the daughter of Dean Constantine Palos and Diana Palos, both of Lawrence. The groom is the son of Lee Henry Shiney, Kechi, and Linda Kay White, Kansas City, Mo. Maid of honor was Anna Jackson. A reception followed in their backyard. The bride is a graduate of Kansas University and Massage Therapy Training Institute. She is a massage therapist at Kinetikos in Lawrence. The groom is self-employed at Shiney Independent, a local custom screen printing business. The couple reside in Lawrence.
Adlof and Lewis
Suzanne Marie Adlof, Lawrence, and Tad Jay Lewis, Overland Park, announce their engagement. The future bride is the daughter of Bobby Adlof, Texarkana, Texas, and the late Treva Adlof. She is a 1998 graduate of Redwater High School, Redwater, Texas. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in speech-language pathology from University of Central Arkansas in 2002 and a Master of Arts degree in speech-language pathology from Kansas University in 2004. She is a Ph.D. candidate in speech-language-hearing sciences and disorders from KU and will be a postdoctoral researcher at Learning Research and Development Center in Pittsburgh, beginning Aug. 1. The future groom is the son of Tim and Kristine Lewis, Concordia. He is a 1997 graduate of Concordia High School and earned a Bachelor of General Studies degree in economics from KU in 2007. He is employed by Rocky Mountain Emergency Vehicles. The couple plan a July 4, 2009, wedding at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence.
Skelton and Wuerdeman
Jay and Beth Skelton, Perry, and Sharon and David Contrerez, Lyons, announce the engagement of their daughter, Kirstie Skelton to Scott Wuerdeman, both of Oronogo, Mo. The future bride is a 2002 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Pittsburg State University. She is a fifth-grade teacher at Webb City Middle School in Webb City, Mo., and the head coach of the seventh-grade girls volleyball team and assistant coach of the Webb City High School track and field team. The future groom is the son of Mike and Suzy Wuerdeman, Springfield, Mo. He is a 1999 graduate of Independence High School (Kan.) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in construction management from Pittsburg State. He is a field engineer for Crossland Construction Company Inc. The couple plan an Oct. 10, 2009, wedding in Joplin, Mo.
Horne and Popp
Edward Horne, Manhattan, and Nancy Collins, Platte City, Mo., announce the engagement of their daughter and stepdaughter, Laura Horne to Robb Popp, both of Richmond, Va. The future bride is a 1995 graduate of Manhattan High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Kansas University in 2004 and a Masters of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Washington in 2007. She is the social sciences librarian for the University of Richmond. The future groom is the son of Robert Wayne and Rebecca Popp, Lawrence. He is a 1993 graduate of Lawrence High School. While in Lawrence, he was a member of the Border Band and played the bass guitar and did vocals. He is the foreman of commercial construction for FMS Construction of Richmond. The couple plan a Sept. 12, 2009, wedding in Richmond.
Rodney and Linda Czerniak, Lawrence, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with family and with a trip this fall in the southwest United States. The couple were married June 14, 1969, in Duluth, Minn. They moved to Lawrence in 1989. Linda is the resident care coordinator for Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community and Rodney is the assembly room foreman for Reuter Organ Company. They have two daughters, Michelyn “Micci” Hiatt and husband David, Kansas City, Kan.; and Amy Moore and husband Shannon, Lawrence; a son Jason and wife Mandy, Lawrence; and seven grandchildren.
Dennis and Patty Buchholz, Lawrence, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary June 6 with a family dinner on the Plaza in Kansas City, Mo. The couple were married June 8, 1974, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Eudora. Dennis graduated from Lawrence High School in 1973 and Patty graduated from Eudora High School in 1974. Over the years, they have enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with their family. They have two daughters, Angie Sommer and husband Chad, Lawrence; and Amanda Markey and husband Matt, Kansas City, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
Steve and Jane Scherer, Basehor, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a family celebration Sunday. Steve Scherer and Jane Ann Steele were married June 13, 1959, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Effingham. Steve, who was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., retired from Colgate-Palmolive in 1989. Jane is also retired. Their daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Mike Brock, Lawrence, and their grandchildren will play host at the anniversary celebration.
John and Joyce Dillon, Overbrook, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family on Sunday. John Dillon and Joyce Garst were married June 14, 1959, at Washington Creek Church, Lawrence. They both graduated from Overbrook High School and are the former owners of a dairy farm operation and the Overbrook Livestock Commission. They are now retired and split their time between Kansas and Arizona. They are the current owners of the Overbrook Car Wash, and Joyce works part-time at the grocery store in Overbrook. They have three sons, Jeffrey, San Francisco, Douglas and wife Tracey, Lawrence, and the late David; and four grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts.
Ken and Ella Rundle, Medicine Lodge, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open reception hosted by their children and grandchildren, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 21 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 808 N. Cedar, Medicine Lodge. Ken and Ella were married on June 21, 1959, in Arkansas City. Ken taught for two years in the Towanda school district and for five years in the Nortonville school district. He was the superintendent of schools for the McLouth school district for 17 years and was a principal in CUSD 101 for the St. Paul Schools in St. Paul for 20 years. Ella worked for Hallmark Cards Inc., in Lawrence, for 13 1/2 years. She was also a secretary for the superintendent’s office in Erie for 5 1/2 years, and later for the Galesburg schools for 17 years, both in CUSD 101. The couple retired to Medicine Lodge in 2004 and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren. Their children are Margie Eck and husband Daryl, Sharon; and the late Fred. Lee and Carolyn Carlson, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in Grand Lake, Colo., with family later this month. Lee Carlson and Carolyn Wheaton were married June 6, 1959, at First Baptist Church, Hutchinson. Lee is a retired American Baptist minister and Carolyn is a retired preschool teacher. They have four daughters, Christy Currier and husband Don, Ottawa; Suzanne Miller, Emporia; Lynne Shaw and husband Peter, Fairfield, Calif.; and Jennifer Lowe and husband Bill, Union, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.
Robert and Jeraldean Cooper, Stockton, Mo., will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends July 11 at the Cedar Oak Lodge Resort, Stockton, Mo. Robert Cooper and Jeraldean Wensel were married June 6, 1959, at the Oxford (Kan.) Christian Church, with the Rev. Gordon Scott officiating. The couple reside at the Cedar Lodge Resort, Stockton, Mo., where they serve as managers. They have a daughter, Teresa Frye and husband Todd, Belleville; a son, Robert Jr., and wife Joy, Tonganoxie; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and an adopted daughter, Linda Morgison and husband Keith, and their family, Lawrence. Janney and Arthur Burgess, Lawrence, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a family dinner in February. The couple were married Feb. 9, 1944, in Kansas City, Mo. Arthur practiced family medicine in Oswego for 32 years. Janney worked in her husband’s office and at Oswego Hospital and taught registered nursing at Labette Community College. The couple retired in 1985 and moved to Lawrence in 1992. She was nominated in 2004 and 2008 for the Roger Hill Center’s Wallace Galluzzi Outstanding Adult Volunteer Award for her volunteer work with Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care. She also serves on the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen board and the Unitarian Fellowship’s Social Action committee. The couple are volunteers for LINK and are members of the Unitarian Fellowship, Kansas Health Care For All, Coalition for Homeless Concerns, Older Women’s League and Lawrence Flower Club. They have five daughters, Anne Burgess, Robin Burgess and Jean Burgess, all of Lawrence; Gwen Burgess Sandal, rural Baldwin; and Susan Burgess, Poway, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
