Anniversary

Stultz

Stultz Harold Sr. and Sue Stultz, rural Hillsboro, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 12 at the Hillsboro Senior Center with friends and family from Lawrence, Dodge City, Pratt, Hutchinson, Goessel, Hillsboro, and Lawton, Okla. The event was hosted by their children and grandchildren. Harold Stultz and Sue Stockwell were married July 12, 1959, at the First Christian Church in Pratt. They moved to Lawrence in 1973. Harold medically retired from Kansas University in 1997 after 18 years of employment. Sue worked at KU Continuing Education for 29 years, retiring in 2004. Harold and Sue moved from Lawrence to Hillsboro in 2004 to enjoy their retirement. They have three sons, Bruce and wife Cindy, Lawton, Okla., and Mike and Harold Jr. and wife Jennifer, all of Hillsboro; and eight grandchildren.

Hundley

Hundley Jerry and Judy Hundley will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception, hosted by their children and grandchildren, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 in the fellowship hall at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H. Gerald Hundley and Judith Hemphill were married on Aug. 23, 1959, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. During their married life, they lived in Manhattan, Colby, Atwood, Holcomb, Garden City, Eudora, and presently in rural Lawrence. While in Garden City, Jerry was an instructor for more than 30 years at Garden City Community College in agricultural mechanization, irrigation technology and alternative energies. He began the industrial motor controls, programmable logic controls, hydraulics and pneumatics, and industrial ammonia refrigeration programs at GCCC. Jerry also worked for Kansas State University teaching agricultural mechanization in Nigeria in 1973. Judy worked in several offices as an administrative assistant, including Fuller Real Estate, USD 457 and St. Dominic School. The couple were involved with church, 4-H, and Boy Scout activities, and hosted three students from Japan, Colombia and Russia through the American Field Service exchange program. They are now retired. They have a son, Jay and wife Gretchen, Baldwin City; two daughters, Jody Hundley, Irving, Texas, and Jane Hundley and husband David Eastridge, Lexington, Mass.; and four grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts.

Broers Harley and Janet Broers, Wellsville, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open reception, hosted by their children, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Ottawa Country Club, 1001 E. Logan St. Harley Broers and Janet Scott were married Aug. 9, 1959, at the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. Harley was employed by Braniff Airways and the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement in 2001. Janet taught in the Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley school districts and later served as principal of Cordley and Sunflower schools in Lawrence. The couple moved to the family farm in Franklin County after retiring. They have two daughters, Sharilyn Cromer and husband Bruce, Baldwin City, and Andrea Melanson and husband Dennis, Blue Springs, Mo.; and four grandchildren.

Snedger Charles “Okie” and Jean Snedger, Lawrence, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with a family dinner. Charles Ervin Snedger and Bonnie Jean Chapman were married Aug. 10, 1944, in Vallejo, Calif. The couple met while Okie was in the U.S. Navy attending Kansas University. After World War II, they settled in Lawrence. They owned and operated Snedeger’s Coin Laundry for 22 years. Okie retired from the Kansas Public Service Gas Company in 1990. Jean had published and continues to work on family genealogy books. The couple have two daughters, Sonnie Kemberling and husband Jerry, and Wendy Dalquest and husband Ron, all of Lawrence; a son Charles and wife Sarah, Baldwin City; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Freideman The Rev. Phillip and Patricia Friedeman, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday. A marriage covenant renewal service will be followed by a buffet, hosted by their sons, for invited guests and family at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. Phillip Friedeman and Patricia Hiss were married Aug. 9, 1959, at the First Congregational Church of Great Bend, with the Rev. Edward Brantz officiating. Phillip graduated from Kansas University in 1959, Andover Newton Theological School in 1963, and Illoff School of Theology in 1976. He began phased retirement after 35 years, serving nine churches in six states. He currently serves as a director of aftercare for Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Patricia attended Doane College in 1955 and graduated from Emporia State University in 1958. She taught school for three years before becoming a full-time homemaker until moving to Lawrence where she was an associate with KU Endowment until 2001. They have two sons, P. Bradford Edward and Rosemary Bradford, Tonganoxie, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society. Edward Bradford and Rosemary Sieben were married Oct. 29, 1949, in Easton. The couple are 1949 graduates of Winchester High School. Edward worked at Behee’s Paint Store and was part owner of Bradford Powers. He was also the manager of Cook Paint in Leavenworth and Greeley, Colo., and later for Sherwin Williams in Denver. He retired in 1995. Rosemary was a bookkeeper for 16 years at Missouri Valley Steel in Leavenworth, before moving to Colorado in 1983. She retired in 1993. They have a son, David, Centennial, Colo.; two daughters, Marylee Berry, McLouth, and Kim Bradford, Littleton, Colo.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The couple requests no gifts.

A family trip to Hawaii is planned later. Walter C. Houk and Janice L. Stewart were married Aug. 9, 1959, at the First Methodist Church in Lawrence. Walt has been in the travel business for over 50 years. For more than 35 years, he coached all ages in baseball, from Little League to semi-professional. Jan has been a homemaker and was the volunteer manager of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Gift Shop for 15 years. She has been involved in the travel business for the past 15 years. They both are with Travellers Inc. travel agency.

Riehm

Harold and Donna Riehm celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on a week-long cruise with 17 family members from five states. Harold Riehm and Donna Vite were married Aug. 23, 1959, near Buchanan, Mich. They are both graduates of North Central College, Naperville, Ill., where they met. Donna retired in 1994 from elementary teaching. She taught at Kennedy and Deerfield schools in Lawrence. Harold retired in 1994. Following graduate work, he joined the political science faculty at Kansas University. He later held various positions with the State of Kansas, as research director for local government study commissions, and as executive director and lobbyist for state professional associations of physicians. They have a son, Michael, Lawrence; three daughters, Jodi Meyer and husband Steve, Willmar, Minn., Jami Riehm, Kansas City, Mo., and Juli Roedel and husband Ethan, Littleton, Colo.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Don Whitaker and Jean Allen were married Aug. 27, 1939, at Jean’s mother’s home, outside of Ottawa. Both Don and Jean graduated from Ottawa University in 1939. After the wedding they moved to western Kansas, where Don taught school and coached at Selden and Plains high schools. During World War II, Don was in civil service working for the U.S. Army in radio schools in Belleville, Ill. and Sioux Falls, S.D. Following the war, Don taught and coached at Tonganoxie High School until he went to work for a farming implement firm in Ottawa. In 1955, the family moved to Lawrence, where Don bought partial ownership in an International Harvester dealership. Later he worked for John Haddock Ford (now Laird Noller Ford) until his retirement. Both Don and Jean belonged to First United Methodist Church and University Club. Don was also a member of the Kiwanis Club. They have two daughters, Nancy Fabrizio and husband Frank, Denver, and June Cummings and husband Steve, Lawrence; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
