Robert and Mary Lou Morris, Lecompton, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 10 in the Fellowship Hall of the Lecompton United Methodist Church. Robert Morris and Mary Lou Salisbury were married Aug. 10, 1958, in Lecompton. Robert worked for Dupont, Flexel and UCB in the cellophane business and retired after 42 years. Mary Lou is a homemaker. They were foster parents for many years and have been sweethearts since sixth grade. They have six children: Tim and Terri Morris, Lecompton; Jeff and Tammy Morris, Lecompton; Kim and Mike Stewart, Lecompton; Vickie and Steve Marino, Lecompton; Tanya and Mark Bartling, Perry; and Stewart Morris, Lecompton. Fred and Marilyn McElhenie will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next Saturday. Fred McElhenie and Marilyn Shaffer were married on Aug. 16, 1958, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Leavenworth. Fred retired after working 45 years at Kansas University, holding various positions in the division of Student Affairs. Before her retirement, Marilyn worked in retail sales in the Lawrence community. They also celebrated their anniversary earlier this summer with a family gathering and picnic. Their children are Timothy, Kansas City, Kan.; Erin, Oak Harbor, Wash.; and Patrick and wife Shirley, Sauk City, Wis. They have five grandchildren.

George was a radio and television repairman for many years and later ran an antique store in downtown Lawrence before retiring. Sheila baby-sat for many years and retired from Hallmark in 1991. They have 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Victor Eugene Nelson and Phyllis Johnson were married July 19, 1958, in Rock Island, Ill. Gene and Phyllis graduated from Augustana College, Rock Island, in 1958 with bachelor's degrees. Gene earned a doctorate from the University of Colorado. He was the chairman of the biology department at Baker University for more than 25 years. He also taught at Kansas University before coming to Baker in 1970. Phyllis was the director of financial aid at Baker for many years before her current duties as computer specialist and support at the university. She is also a noted potter. They also own and operate the Sports Cache Bait & Tackle store in Baldwin City, a local laundromat and several rental properties. They have three children: Victor S. Nelson, Wichita; Jon Nelson, Lawrence; and Donald Nelson, Overbrook. They have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The couple request no gifts.

Lowell retired from the Santa Fe Railway offices in 1993 after 38 years. Caroll worked for the Lyndon public schools for eight years and was a homemaker. Rod and Margie met at Manhattan Christian College as students. They have served in the ministry in Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. They served at Lawrence Heights Christian Church from 1979 to 2000 and are currently ministering at North Lawrence Christian Church. Ruby earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from KU. She taught school for six years in Lawrence and Overland Park. She has been the senior partners director at Commerce Bank in Lawrence for 14 years and plans travel, events and seminars for senior clients. Ray retired after 42 years with Capitol Federal Savings, where he managed the Lawrence office for 15 years as well as the eastern region of the company. Frieda is a homemaker and has volunteered at Shawnee Mission Medical Center for 34 years.
