Lawrence Norman and Rosemary Lawrence, of Lawrence, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married Feb. 20, 1946, in Terre Haute, Ind. They moved from Indianapolis to Arlington, Va., in 1964 and from Virginia to Lawrence in November 1971. Norman worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 33 years, retiring in 1981. He worked until 1985 as a consultant for the meat and poultry industry. Their children are Norman Jr. and Sherry Lawrence, Eudora; Mary Schweitzer, Tel Aviv, Israel; and Ruth Netting, Arlington, Va. They have 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Patterson-Cooper Mark Patterson and Spring Cooper, both of Grand Canyon, Ariz., announce their engagement. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Brent and Kristene Cooper, Kanab, Utah. She is a 2004 graduate of Uintah High School in Vernal, Utah. She is employed with Xanterra Parks as a hotel clerk at Yavapai Lodge in Grand Canyon, Ariz. The future groom is the son of Kenney and Lucy Patterson, Perry. He graduated from Perry-Lecompton High School in 2000. He is employed with Xanterra Parks at the Fred Harvey Mule Barn as a trail guide into the Grand Canyon. The couple plan an April 1, 2006, wedding in Kanab, Utah.
Long Dr. Max and Edna Long, Abilene, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 5 at the First Christian Church in Abilene. Max Long and Edna Edwards were married March 4, 1956, at the Central Avenue Christian Church in Topeka. They lived in Wichita for six months, moving to Abilene in October 1956 when Max opened a chiropractic office. Edna is employed in the administrative offices for Dickinson County. She graduated from Linwood High School in 1953. Their children are Jeffrey Long, Abilene, and Bruce and Deana Long, Farmers Branch, Texas. They have six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The couple request no gifts.
Hoover-Stites Kelly and Melinda Hoover, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Heidi Hoover, Lawrence, to Mark Stites, Edwardsville, son of Ed and Judy Stites, Edwardsville. Shaffer Richard and Harriet Shaffer, Lawrence, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with a family trip to San Diego in the summer. They were married Feb. 26, 1966, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lawrence. Harriet is a counselor at Southwest Junior High School in Lawrence. Dick is a retired research chemist, having worked at InterX-Merck and Oread Laboratories. The couple's children are Susie and Mark Fagan, Lawrence; Steve and Katie Shaffer, Allen, Texas; and Carol and Brian Birnbaum, Denver. They have three grandchildren.
