Annie and John Rice, Oskaloosa, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Sunday. Annie Phillips and John Rice were married Sept. 18, 1935. They both attended Oskaloosa High School. John graduated in 1933 and Annie in 1934. They spent 20 years of their married life in Montana, 25 years in Arizona, and returned to Oskaloosa in 1980. John celebrated his 90th birthday on May 5, and Annie will celebrate her 90th birthday on Nov. 7. John served in the Navy in World War II and spent his time on the Pacific Ocean. Margaret and David Shirk, of rural Douglas County, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary Sunday. David Shirk and Margaret Lewis were married Sept. 14, 1940. David attended El Dorado High School and Kansas University, where he played football and was captain in 1938. He was coach, teacher and/or administrator at KU, Haskell Indian Nations University, Augusta High School, Abilene High School and Seaman High School. He served in the U.S. Army for four years and was discharged as captain. Margaret attended Liberty Memorial High School, Colorado University and KU. She had different jobs, having spent 50 years with volunteer and part-time summer work with KU Alumni Association, and was associated with the Long Investment Co. of Abilene and is still active in the investment field. Margaret has been an American Red Cross volunteer for 40 years. They have two daughters, Nancy Yonally, Overland Park, and Sally Walquist, Lawrence. They also have four grandchildren and two great-grandsons. A casual reception will be given from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Shirk's Barn, north of Lawrence. The couple request no gifts.

Those in attendance included their parents and Amber Kostner and Madison Grimes, sisters of the bride. The bride is a 2001 graduate of Wichita Northwest High School. She graduated from Kansas University with a bachelor's degree in political science in 2004. She works for Quality Solutions as administrative assistant in Wichita. She will pursue a master's degree in public administration at Friends University in Wichita while the groom is overseas. The groom is a 2001 graduate of Free State High School. He is a master-at-arms in the U.S. Navy and is stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He has been ordered to leave for Bahrain, where he will be part of a mobile detachment providing security for caravans in the Middle East.
