Couples announcements June 11, 2005




Herbert and Wilma Rowland, Lawrence, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 2 with a family gathering in Ellis. They were married June 2, 1945, in Alva, Okla. They are both retired school teachers who have lived in Lawrence since 1959. Their children are John and Elizabeth Kolacny, Ellis. They have three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.



Jerry and Jane May, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Tara May, Asheville, N.C., to Steve Parrott, Asheville, N.C., son of Robert and Charlotte Parrott, Raleigh, N.C. The bride-to-be is a 1987 graduate of Lawrence High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at Kansas University. She worked for 10 years in public relations in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco before pursuing graduate studies at Harvard Divinity School, where she received her master's degree with a concentration in ethics and economics. She is self-employed as a consultant. The future groom earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Eastern Carolina University. After graduation, he competed on the professional mountain bike circuit with the Toyota racing team. For 10 years, he worked as an environmental technician for the state of North Carolina and then focused his energies on fly fishing. He currently owns and operates Asheville Anglers, a guide service and outfitters focused on trout fishing in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. The couple plan an Oct. 7 wedding in Lawrence.



Paul and Neva Garber, Lawrence, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family. They were married June 9, 1945. Paul retired from Farmland Industries, and Neva retired from Hercules Inc. Their children are Michael Garber, Douglas Garber, Priscilla McPheeters, all of Lawrence; Patricia Gleue, Topeka; and the late Gordon Garber. They have 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.



Melanie Bartlett and Jason Thomson, both of Ontario, Canada, were married April 30, 2005, at Danforth Chapel in Lawrence with Judge Jean Shepherd officiating. The bride is the daughter of Gary and Susie Bartlett, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Valrena Bolus and Terry Thomson, Ontario, Canada. Matron of honor was Cathy Jones. Bridesmaids were Sara Weihn and Brianne Bartz. Best man was Paul Bolus. Groomsmen were Terry Thomson and Gary Bartlett. Ring bearer was the groom's son, Cabot Thomson. A reception followed the ceremony at SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Lawrence. The both work for the groom's communications company, Creativemercenary. They reside in Ontario.



Leonard and Nancy Steinle, Lawrence, are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a party today at Smith Center in Lawrence. Hosts are their children. Nancy Ruehlen and Leonard Steinle were married June 12, 1955, in McPherson. Nancy was a school teacher and Leonard was a teacher and a school superintendent in several Kansas school districts. He also was on the staff at Independence Community College and Southwestern College in Winfield. Leonard received his doctorate in education at Kansas University in 1974. Their children are Lenette and Steve Johnson, Gladstone, Mo.; Kirk and Denise Steinle, Independence; Dr. Brad and Monica Steinle, Shawnee; and Melanie Steinle, Overland Park. They have seven grandchildren. Leonard and Nancy also are having a family dinner Sunday at the Hereford House



Richard and Ella Thacker, Lecompton, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception for friends and family from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 26 at the Lecompton Community Building. Richard Thacker and Ella Martin were married Dec. 24, 1955, in Park City. Richard retired from the Santa Fe Railroad shops in Topeka in 1995 after 44 years with the railroad. The couple's children are Ron and Karmell Thacker, Virginia Beach, Va., and Susan Thacker, Great Bend. They also have two grandchildren. The couple request no gifts.



Darrell and Dona Wieden, Baldwin, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family vacation to Florida. Darrell Wieden and Dona Bethel were married June 17, 1955, in Table Rock, Neb. Darrell is retired from the Navy and Sallie Mae. Dona is a registered nurse at Lawrence Otolaryngology. Their children are Gary and Tracy Wieden, Patty and John Akers, Dale and Debra Wieden, Deborah and Robert Bieniecki, and Suzanne Wieden and Ray Emory. They also have 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.


Ruch and Abel

Kjrsten Abel and Corey Ruch, both of Lawrence, announce their engagement. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Daniel and Susan Abel, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is a graduate of Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo. She is employed with K-State Research and Development-Douglas County. The future groom is the son of Donita Ruch, Adrian, Mo. He is a graduate of Adrian High School and Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Mo. He is employed with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. The couple plan a July 9 wedding in South Park in Lawrence.



John and Leslie Santa Cruz, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter Geri Santa Cruz, Olathe, to Trenton Teager, Spring Hill, son of Larry and Elaine Teager, Overland Park. The bride-to-be obtained her Realtor license in 2005. She works for Homebuyers Real Estate in Kansas City and also works as the office manager of Home Sweet Home. The future groom graduated in 1997 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He is a managing partner for Home Sweet Home. The couple plan an Oct. 8 wedding in Bucyrus.



Steve and Dianne Martin, Overbrook, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Martin, Lawrence, to Chet Unruh, Lawrence, son of Jim and Sandy Unruh, Lawrence. The bride-to-be is a 1997 graduate of Santa Fe Trail High School. She is a senior at Washburn University, where she is studying public administration. She is employed at St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka. The future groom is a 1995 graduate of Lawrence High School. He works for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. The couple plan an Oct. 8 wedding at Liberty Hall in Lawrence.



Jeff and Sandy Lockhart, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Lockhart, Topeka, to Michael Tremblay, Topeka, son of Garry and LaRae Tremblay, Lincoln, Neb. The bride-to-be is a 2001 graduate of Free State High School. She attended Community College of the Air Force and Emporia State University. She is an accounting technician at Forbes Field Air Refueling Wing in Topeka. The future groom is a 1998 graduate of Pius X High School in Lincoln, Neb. He attended Southeast Community College of Lincoln, Neb., and the Community College of the Air Force. He is a survival equipment technician at Forbes Field Air Refueling Wing in Topeka. The couple plan a Sept. 3 wedding at St. Lawrence Catholic Chapel.
