Jerry retired from Farmland Industries as a plant maintenance superintendent in 1997. He was in the Army for three years, which included a tour of duty in Korea from 1953 to 1955. JoAnn is a homemaker. He currently owns and operates Asheville Anglers, a guide service and outfitters focused on trout fishing in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. They are both retired school teachers who have lived in Lawrence since 1959. Their children are John and Elizabeth Kolacny, Ellis. They have three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Nancy Ruehlen and Leonard Steinle were married June 12, 1955, in McPherson. Nancy was a school teacher and Leonard was a teacher and a school superintendent in several Kansas school districts. He also was on the staff at Independence Community College and Southwestern College in Winfield. Leonard received his doctorate in education at Kansas University in 1974. Their children are Lenette and Steve Johnson, Gladstone, Mo.; Kirk and Denise Steinle, Independence; Dr. Brad and Monica Steinle, Shawnee; and Melanie Steinle, Overland Park. Fleda Ann "Shorty" and Alfred J. Yost of Lawrence celebrated their 50th anniversary June 5 in Branson, Mo. Their children, Dr. Brad and Kimla Yost and Bart and Georgette Yost, and grandchildren hosted a surprise wedding vow renewal ceremony on the grounds of Big Cedar Lodge, followed by a dinner. The couple owned and operated Yost Funeral Service for 13 years in Wellington before moving in 1978 to Lawrence, where they own Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Gene and Ann Durham, Lawrence, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Italy last fall. They also will celebrate with their family later this summer in Colorado. They were married June 12, 1955, in Oakley. Gene retired in 2001 after several years with the Kansas Turnpike Authority and 25 years previously as the owner of The Campus Hideaway Restaurant, Lawrence. Ann taught high school art for 34 years, 25 of those at Tonganoxie before retiring in 1999. Their children are Kinon Durham, Morrison, Colo., and Craig Durham, Boise, Idaho. They also have two grandchildren.

They also took a trip June 11-18 to the Royal Hideaway Playacar Resort & Spa in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Arthur Thomas and Barbara Butters were married June 15, 1955, in Minneapolis, Minn. Arthur received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., in 1951. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a master's degree in counseling from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1954. He received a doctorate in counseling from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich., in 1967. He was a high school counselor in Detroit Lakes, Minn., from 1954 to 1956, and a high school counselor at Alexander Ramsey High School in Roseville, Minn., from 1956 to 1964. He was associate professor of counseling and psychological services at Kansas University from 1968 to 1994, when he retired. Barbara received a Bachelor of Science degree from Hamline University, St. Paul, Minn., in 1955. She was an English teacher in Detroit Lakes, Minn., from 1955 to 1956. She taught seventh grade core curriculum in the Moundsview School District, Roseville, Minn., from 1956 to 1958. She taught homebound students for the Lawrence school district from 1968 to 1970. She taught seventh grade common learnings, then seventh grade English at West Junior High School in Lawrence from 1970 to 1994, when she retired.
